So I built Skylake system with 6700K, 16GB Corsair 2400 RAM and MSI Z170A Krait Gaming and max stable overclock I can get is 4.5 Ghz at 1.4v under load.
4.7 Ghz crashes even at 1.45v within few minutes.
Temps are maxing out at 60 degrees with custom water loop.
4.5Ghz at 1.4v is stable in real bench but not in prime 95.
I am very disappointed with this chip.
So do you guys think that it is the chip or can it be the motherboard.?

Do you need the 1.4 volts to get to 4.5?
I can only get mine to this speed but only need 1.3v
and I use an all in one cooler i80gt and my temps are ok max at 65

as you can see from the graph your 6700K is definitely below average, not that big of a deal there is a small performance difference from 4.7 to 4.5

try and see if you can return it and get another one.

btw 1.45 is still safe for 24/7 OC

I did return it to overclockers but they sent it back to me saying that it is within manufacturers spec which it is.
Bad luck I guess.

Yeah that chart was quite handy to give me an idea that my 6700k @ 4.7 was about average. Sits at 1.4v and goes quite happily. If it try 4.8 it won't play even at 1.42 and if I try and drop 4.7 down to 1.39 core 1 fails prime after about 10 seconds.

I did return it to overclockers but they sent it back to me saying that it is within manufacturers spec which it is.
Bad luck I guess.

Did you return it because it wouldn't clock as fast as you wanted it, or because you changed your mind and no longer wanted the product?

Returned it because it is 1.42v under load on stock speed when everything is set to auto in bios.
When I told that to overclockers staff they said that it shouldn't be like that and that there is something wrong with the chip.
Then after testing it they said that it is 1.32v on their motherboard.

Motherboard is the MSI Z170A Krait Gaming with latest bios and the power supply is some old Tagan Pipe Rock 1100W.
That power supply was running 2 overclocked and overvolted GTX 580 with 2500K even at 5ghz stable no problem.
Now it only powers 6700K and one 980 ti.

There is a Asus Z170/i7 6700k overclock setup that I used from the Asus website. It's done by some famous overclocking dude .. I know you haven't got the same mobo but it might give you an idea as to what voltages you may need. My 6700k went straight to 4.6 out of the box using their setup guide and it's fantastic and cool .. I think I could stretch it to around 4.8 or more without stressing the cooling side (corsair closed loop) .. If I find the site I'll send a link .. but keep trying .. mines great ..
