Defender update issue

Hi all

Having trouble with the latest defender update from Windows Update - it's downloaded but doesn't install. Every time I load up update, it says the file is already downloaded and proceeds to install it - which fails. Anyone else having this issue?

Just wouldnt install no matter how times i tried

Maybe there's a way of deleting the downloaded file?

Just had this again today, then I realised what was happening.

I only use Windows Defender for occasional manual scans - I don't have the service running all the time. The update can't install when the service isn't running, so the solution is:

- start the Windows Defender service
- let Windows Update install the new defs
- give it a minute to finish cooking, then stop the service again
