Portsmouth Speed limit reduced to 20mph

I cant talk about Portsmouth because I havent been down that way for ages, but on some residential roads 20mph is a sensible speed limit, but no doubt there will be 20mph limits on roads that are wholey inapropriate and a higher limit wouldnt be unreasonable.

When it says every road in Portsmouth is that everyroad or just ones with houses off them.

I go to Portsmouth to shop at central Portsmouth or shop/cinema etc.. at Gun Warf. So any idea where the limit will start.

Lately they have been changing the limits going into and out of Ports. No doubt another set of speed cameras. Only two that I pass but I no of people who have been caught on one or the other.

Live in Petersfield by the way if that means anything to you. Near the Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Does anyone actually obey 20mph speed limits?

Outside schools and when the police are watching doesn't count... I usually go slower than 20mph outside busy schools and I'm always a good boy if there is an obvious police presence...

Oh my god, this place can only get worse.
The road works that gone on in this city is ridiculous, the bus lanes they have put in, in waterlooville to cosham are pointless to the extreme.
Ive never actually thought i would want to be in southampton more than pompey. But im actually looking forward to going back to uni.

I would love to know where this is specific too?

I can understand it in some roads in hilsea, into central portsmouth, because the terraced streets just created one way roads, with all the parked cars and you cant see kids stepping out, or old people, plus you really shouldnt be doing more than 20, unless u want to take out a few cars and wingmirrors.

Surely this cant apply to the whole thing, it would be impossible to get round.

So driving around in 3rd gear is someones idea of reducing polution

All this speed lowering arguements get my back up, they give demonstrations of 'look what happens when you hit someone in a 30mph area' but never take into account that unless your asleep you will have slammed on your brakes prior to the impact & therefore will hit the person at considerably less speed.
Even worse is the supposed braking distance which makes out you need about eight car lengths to stop which is rubbish .

I agree the pollution arguement is ridiculous, its not that bad in pompey anyway.

The thing about portsmouth though, which is probably similar to some other places in England i dont know. Is that when it was rebuilt after being bombed to death in WW2, and before the houses where created very close together in big straight lines and the cars pack the streets, leaving you with the annoying situation of one way streets with no visibility. Anything stepping out from behind a car would just get whacked.

Really ? i dont think ive ever been as slow as 20 mph :o on any road regardless of the limit. I usually just stick to the 30 if im going past a school unless all the kids are coming out etc

Nice. So that means that all the poor people who's nearest Pizzahut is 5 miles away or more can never get a hot pizza delivered????????? WTF is up with that.
