Focus Gearstick problem

Hi all,

Not sure of the correct terminology for this stuff, but the spring that returns the gearstick into the central position in the gate appears to have gone. It returns from the right side to central, but not from left side to central.

Is this something I could fix? I assume it is a spring that does this, is it accessible or is it within the gearbox itself? Basically is it going to be a cheap or expensive job!

Car is a 2000 Focus 1.8 Zetec.

I took this from my own guide that I made for the owners club, the failure of the return spring on the IB5 gearbox is a common fault

Difficulty rating: 2/5
Time to do: approx 30-45mins

Part No: 1142069 - £2.82 +VAT

Tools needed:

- Lots of different screw divers

Optional tools:

- cleaning products

Well why not have a good clean when you got your centre console out haha

Right down to business, firstly you will need to remove your gear knob, the stock Focus one should just twist off, if it is tight like mine wrap it in a cloth or towel for extra grip!
One that's off you will need to pull the hand brake on as far as it will go, you will be surprised how far it will go, the nearer vertical this gets the easier your job will be.
Next move onto unscrewing your first 3 screws, 2 of these screws are located in the cup holders, the third is locked under the rear ash tray and you will need a small fine screw driver to flick the cover off to expose the screw head
If you have traction control like I do this makes the job harder as the wire beneath the centre console is quite short, so slip your arm under and pop the button out like I did, then remove the connector block to the switch

The entire centre console will now lift and slide off; this can then be placed in the passenger foot well.
You may have to push your chairs right back for the centre console to fit through the gap as well

The sight that greats you below may look terrifying but believe me you will soon see that it is not so bad... this is where those cleaning products come in handy if your anything like me lol
Take your time to move the stick around and view how the spring behaves

From here you will be able to view the return spring that has snapped

First on the agenda is to pop this link out in the above picture
This will free up the mechanism and allow for easy working and manovering.

Next undo the following 3 screws; this needs a larger screw driver than before

Once the screws are out the black plastic thing should move out of the way quite easily, I just dropped mine into the foot well for later!

Now you can gain access to your old spring

REMEMBER which way around the spring goes, and also try to transfer as much grease as possible from the old spring to the new one.
I used a screwdriver to help lift the arms of the spring into there location, one should go each side of a tiny bit of black plastic that.not inside the piece of black plastic like I originally tried

What happened with my old spring was it basically had sheered one side off, hence why I only had springy tension when I moved the stick one way and not the other.

Once you are happy with the new spring do the reverse of how you got the thing apart but do not put the centre console back on. Only go this far

This will allow you to play about with the gear stick and check that the new spring is indeed located correctly, if it is not then simply undo the parts and refit the spring until it is working correctly.

If you take your time and pay attention to what you are doing there should be no problems

Once you are happy then replace your centre console, reconnecting the traction control button if you have one and slipping the gaiters back over the gear stick and handbrake.
Then replace your screws and screw cover as well as gear knob

Sit back and admire your handy work. You just did a job that Ford will charge about £80 for, for the same price of a pint. That saves you about £77

ASH1982, that is just fantastic!! What a great guide and nice to know someone (me!) is going to benefit from the time you took to put it together.

One quick question, does removing the center console mean that I don't have to remove the gater surround? I assumed that would be my first move.

Thanks again, and I will keep you updated when I give it a go in a few days!

Cheers :)

Ne worrys mate
Once you have taken the gear knob off, the gater surround will lift over when you lift the center console out... no need to seperate the gater and console

I had this happen last year and followed this exact same guide. Very easy to do, the hardest part is having the confidence to actually do it!.. if u can poke around inside a pc then this is easy for you.

Agreed totally
I did this with no idea what I was doing, hence why I made the guide for the owners club

Well I fitted the new spring yesterday with some help from a friend and it took no longer than 10 minutes!

Thanks again for your guide, it was great to follow and left us in no doubt what to do. And as you said in the guide, it's great to think I fixed the car for £3.50 instead of the £80 or so Ford would have charged!!

Cheers :)

Also found out i have the same problem :( will be giving it a go myself soon.

EDIT: Just been out having similar problems here the gear stick returns to the centre position from right but not from left, where do i source this part from?

Walk into Ford parts and quote this number .... Part No: 1142069 - £2.82 +VAT

Omg! My Focus stick is exactly the same, I just assumed it was worn or something.

Thanks for the guide, looks like a job for one afternoon :)

Likewise i didn't think anything of it :p

Is it necessary to take the Handbrake and Gear stick surround and knob off or can i do it without, it looks like it is possible without and surely would make things easier.

You need to unscrew the gear knob. You then need to unscrew the three screws holding the centre console in place. You then lift the whole console up and over the gearstick and handbrake. You don't need to touch the gaters surrounding the bottom of the gearstick and handbrake at all.

So surely if i dont need to touch the gaiters at the bottom why do i need to unscrew the gear knob? the centre console will lift perfectly over the gear knob

Try it without taking the gear knob off you will see
