I took this from my own guide that I made for the owners club, the failure of the return spring on the IB5 gearbox is a common fault
Difficulty rating: 2/5
Time to do: approx 30-45mins
Part No: 1142069 - £2.82 +VAT
Tools needed:
- Lots of different screw divers
Optional tools:
- cleaning products
Well why not have a good clean when you got your centre console out haha
Right down to business, firstly you will need to remove your gear knob, the stock Focus one should just twist off, if it is tight like mine wrap it in a cloth or towel for extra grip!
One that's off you will need to pull the hand brake on as far as it will go, you will be surprised how far it will go, the nearer vertical this gets the easier your job will be.
Next move onto unscrewing your first 3 screws, 2 of these screws are located in the cup holders, the third is locked under the rear ash tray and you will need a small fine screw driver to flick the cover off to expose the screw head
If you have traction control like I do this makes the job harder as the wire beneath the centre console is quite short, so slip your arm under and pop the button out like I did, then remove the connector block to the switch
The entire centre console will now lift and slide off; this can then be placed in the passenger foot well.
You may have to push your chairs right back for the centre console to fit through the gap as well
The sight that greats you below may look terrifying but believe me you will soon see that it is not so bad... this is where those cleaning products come in handy if your anything like me lol
Take your time to move the stick around and view how the spring behaves
From here you will be able to view the return spring that has snapped
First on the agenda is to pop this link out in the above picture
This will free up the mechanism and allow for easy working and manovering.
Next undo the following 3 screws; this needs a larger screw driver than before
Once the screws are out the black plastic thing should move out of the way quite easily, I just dropped mine into the foot well for later!
Now you can gain access to your old spring
REMEMBER which way around the spring goes, and also try to transfer as much grease as possible from the old spring to the new one.
I used a screwdriver to help lift the arms of the spring into there location, one should go each side of a tiny bit of black plastic that.not inside the piece of black plastic like I originally tried
What happened with my old spring was it basically had sheered one side off, hence why I only had springy tension when I moved the stick one way and not the other.
Once you are happy with the new spring do the reverse of how you got the thing apart but do not put the centre console back on. Only go this far
This will allow you to play about with the gear stick and check that the new spring is indeed located correctly, if it is not then simply undo the parts and refit the spring until it is working correctly.
If you take your time and pay attention to what you are doing there should be no problems
Once you are happy then replace your centre console, reconnecting the traction control button if you have one and slipping the gaiters back over the gear stick and handbrake.
Then replace your screws and screw cover as well as gear knob
Sit back and admire your handy work. You just did a job that Ford will charge about £80 for, for the same price of a pint. That saves you about £77
