Just come back from my 4th visit to the island of Rhodos and as usual found something new to me. 3 abandoned tanks next to the road.

My knowledge of AFV's is limited to say the least. Anyone have any ideas what they might be? They appeared to be largely stripped of engines and useful equipment. I would have taken more detail pics but I was low on memory card and keen to avoid a run in with the local Army boys.

they look a tad like old american m24 chaffee, but they were ww2 era and those look a tad newer

thats the best guess i can make really

I'm not entirely up to speed on Greek armour, but it looks very much like some variant of the American M60 'Patton'. That said though, I don't know!

EDIT: Looks like the guy above may be correct, according to the book I've just grabbed quickly it looks more like the M24 Chaffee.

Quite sure those are M48, they are commonly used as fixed gun emplacements on the islands.

Glad you're in here - can you give me the gist of what this sign means?

They seemed to be on the entrance to towns and where tarmac highway meets gravel track, I assume they are something to do with a road improvement scheme?

Cheers for the info gents. Any ideas why they might be abandoned there? I've never driven this road before so I have no idea why they are just sitting at the roadside or how long they have been there.

/EDIT Sorry sister posted using my account

I dunno, they come home for the weekend, and they change everything :(

Didn't know we had M-24s, you learn something new every day.

@Lopez: You see these signs everywhere where building works were performed using EC structural development funds. A lot of information on the sign is pointless, indicating which Municipality/Region this is being performed in (South Aegean, Dodekanissa Forestry Agency, and a description of what the work is (fire-safety measures on the road Kolympion - Arxipolh, Rhodes. It also lists the contractor and the full cost of the works (over the 6 years the program was active/running)

Then it says how much the EC contributed (75%) and how much the state contributed (25%).

Cool, I thought it was something like that. The ones in the Old Town for EC funded monuments etc are all translated but these weren't.
