I thought this should get its own thread to stop peeps missing it if its buried in a 15page existing thread, sorry if posted already but its new to me and I do not seem to see it here.

This is quoted from elsewhere and has nothing to do with me, inc the broken line between her 2 posts.

"hey guys,

first, let me say this. you DO NOT NEED TO USE THE INTERNET EVERY TIME YOU PLAY THIS GAME. it is only the first time.

second, you can uninstall and reinstall this game, and if, by chance, you have 2 computers you want to simultaneously play this game on, you also can do that.

if by some chance you are reinstalling this game without uninstalling it first, a lot, there is a chance you may have to call securom and get a key, or deactivate some older installations.

but if you upgrade your hardware next week, you'll still be able to play the game. if you revamp your system and need to reinstall bioshock, just uninstall it before you go through the overhaul, and then do your reinstall.

calling it "hardware fingerprinting" is a bit alarmist. we do not transmit any of your data to any companies.

really, the only people who will be concerned about any of these security measures are those who are rapidly putting bioshock on many pcs... if you use the game as you normally do, you won't notice this at all." .

"seriously, if you guys are calling securom or 2K and not getting the activation keys, please SM me the names of the people you are talking to. this is NOT supposed to be happening. but everyone i have talked to has told me that when they call, their issues are being resolved.

if you really aren't getting the support you need, please message me about it. but anyone i have asked to supply this information with has not. emails nor names. i am not, in any way, calling you a liar. i want you to have the correct and proper support. but i don't know who to yell at without finding out the weak link. "

Should never have been implemented in the first place.

Whoever thought up the whole thing should be fired and never allowed near any technology newer than the telephone ever again.

Activation annoys me. Genuine customers are burned by it, pirates get around it.

As much as I was skeptical about it originally, Steam is a good alternative here.

I agree, this isn't as bad as Starforce messing up the total system but it is right up there in terms of annoyance to legitimate buyers.

Anyone tried phoning securom i take it you get a number on the game box then?

And more importantly is it a freephone number? and do we have to call the states?

From what I read , the steam version of bioshock also has the same activation as the retail version.

You have to uninstall it first . . . . before you format . . . . Eh? Who came up with THAT idea . . . . ?

Old idea - I have some technical software that has been like that for at least three years. It's so locked down that I can't even change the computer name without entering a new key. You gamers actually have it pretty easy.

games are not the same as products requiring regular subscriptions
And the irony is that your example is easier than bioshock...

Haha and the telephone needs to be unpluged so they cannot ring anyone :p

I can't believe people are still wingeing. Really. So there's some protection on the game that you probably won't notice. Cry me a river.

The game has barely been released a day and there's pages of guff about 'I'm not going to buy it anymore'.

Please, give yourself a week to calm down and see what the deal is then. See how many peoples' lives are torn apart by the fact that although it's a cool game with great atmosphere and fun to be had, they can't enjoy playing it because they're fuming about the fact that they possibly might have to phone a number to reactivate the game in the future, maybe.

//Side note, I take it it won't be in a highstreet retail vidgame store tonight/now/after work?

Enjoy.

The reason people are upset is because you are limited to 2 installs - this means if you have a dual boot machine such as XP and Vista, then you've reached your limit. If you then upgrade your computer (as us gamers always do), then you have to faff about trying to get through to some US company to get your activation reset. Supposedly you can "uninstall" the game before upgrading your computer to get an activation back, but reports are that this isn't always working.

Sums up what I'm thinking

Its $65 on Steam as well, I'm not handing over that much money for a product with so many restrictions.
