Ok guys,

My old PC of 5 years went bang last night, replaced the PSU but still no joy, therefore I thought it was about time to fully upgrade!

I usually build my own PCs but i've spotted that OcuK do the Titan Edge (and I must admint to getting lazy in my old age, so I'll let someone else do the setup!) so ive chosen the following options:-

TITAN EDGE

- Logitech S-220 2.1 Speaker System - OEM (980-000022)
- Samsung SM-226BW 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black
- Logitech MX518 Gaming-Grade Optical Mouse (910-000616)
- Logitech G11 Gaming Keyboard (967929-0120)
- Networking Not Selected
- Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (66I-01939)
- OCZ ProXStream 1000w SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply
- Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (30SB073000002)
- Sony Floppy Drive - Black
- LG GGC-H20L Blu-Ray Reader & HD-DVD ROM Serial ATA Drive - Retail
- RAID 0 Setup
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST3500320AS)
- Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (ST3500320AS)
- Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
- Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
- OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-6400C4 800MHz Reaper HPC Enhanced Bandwidth Edition Dual Channel DDR2 (OCZ2RPR800C44GK)
- Abit IP35 Pro XE Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
- Antec Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
- Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 "LGA775 Conroe" 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail

Obviously this includes a 22" Screen, keyboard and mouse as well.

The system will be used 90% as a gaming rig. So what do you think? Any improvements or any unneccesary items that will make it a bit cheaper and not affect performance? Or any alternative specs for the same money?

Cheers all.

A p45 mobo would be better
45nm E8*00 cpus are better than the old 65nm E6*** cpus. For example, the E8500 is £20 less than the E6850, has a faster clock, and 50% more cache, and is likely to overclock more.
I'd rather have samsung F1 drives than those WDs, the F1s are faster
That psu is overkill by ~250W

does it have to be prebuilt?

Yeah, i really cannot be bothered with the hassle of building a new system right now. I've done it in the past with no issues, but I just want a replacement for my dead system and have someone do the work of putting it together and installing the o/s.

Would this be any better?

- OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666C7 1333MHz Platinum (2x2GB) Dual Channel DDR3 (OCZ3P13334GK)

Agree with the above comment.

I'd go for an x38 motherboard, a 4870, DDR2 and I'd recommend 640gb hard drive(s) as these have more dense platters and are therefore faster.

I'm sure OcUK will do a custom build if you ask them nicely :)

Tried spec'ing a custom machine and asked them if they would do the build, no go on that front as they said they only deal with the machines spec'd on the website. Nevermind, guess I will have to buy the components and do it myself again if I find some time.

i really dont get why people go for 2 lesser cards when a better one is available and cheaper? unless its a braging rights thing just to say they can have SLI :/

its obv better to buy the best single card now and then buy another 1 later if u need it

Stick with the 2x 4850's. They offer better performance than the 2x GTX 260's (or a single GTX 280) and on a more reliable / stable motherboard. And for gaming, personally i would go for the faster Core 2 CPU than a quad.

Ok, thanks for all the input so far - I think i am coming round to the idea of building my own again. As for SLI, I think I will drop that in favour of the single good gfx card. Therefore spec now stands at the following:-

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.16GHz (1333FSB)
Sony Floppy Drive - Black
Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3000GLFS)
Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB 10000RPM SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM (WD3000GLFS)
RAID 0 (for above)
Abit IX38 QuadGT Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon EVO ONE DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GE24GB1066C5DC)
Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7201S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer Lightscribe ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
OCZ GameXStream 700w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply
Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer 7.1 Sound Card - Retail
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (66I-01939)

It's been about 6 years since I built my last one so I do admit to being a little unsure of compatibility these days, but I think i've got it all sorted.

Thoughts on the above?

Swap Wd for samsung f1 drives (320, 640 or 1TB versions). Wd just aren't worth it.
abit to asus mobo
freezer pro 7 although is only good for it's price range, go for a Thermalright Ultra-120A witha 120mm fan.
And asus xoar sound card instead of creative.
