I got a BFG 9800 GTX+ from OCuk around October, and its been playing up.

My system:
Intel Q6600
Asus Striker II Extreme
Corsair XMS3
BFG 9800GTX+ 512Mb x2 in SLI

This problem happens randomly and without warning, and I cannot put my finger on it. It doesn't happen often. I've got 184.48 drivers (the latest). it also happened with other drivers.

No matter if I disable SLI or enable SLI, the problem still exists.

No, I'm not overclocking my system, I did, until earlier this afternoon, and didn't have the problem. I've reverted everything back to stock, and BOOM, this problem.

Also, it only happens when the new card is installed.
The older card has a different BIOS, and the older heatsink/ fan cover. i don't know if this helps.

Any ideas?

Have you tried each card on its own? That should pin down whether it's the card or not. If it's not the card it's probably the PSU.

Well, this card is currently the primary card, the second one is connected, but SLI is disabled. Does that count?

EDIT - I have a Zalman 1000 watt PSU, and I'm using BFG email tedch support at the moment. They say the PSU should be fine.

Check event viewer and see if you have an event id for the time it crashes. If your using vista the answer may lie there if you have an event id of 15016 :).

I have a Palit one and it has happened 3 times to me. It does not happen when you expect it, one time I had left the pc on all night on download and came to use it, it was fine for 3 minutes checking email etc, then the screen went a pinky/grey with the same pattern as yours and a reset was required.

If it happened after a bought of l4d/crysis you could blame heat but it's never happened in a game.

@Vale.

Snap, exactly the same happens to me. I left my pc on for the afternoon, temps were fine, then started using it again around 7pm, for about 5 minutes all was fine, then it happened.

I think maybe it has something to do with the cores clocking down when idling?

As you said, it never happens in-game, it benchmarks around the same as it should do, games performance is great, no artifacts or anything.

@ Rizlaking, no I can't see anything there, except an unexpected shutdown message. But the thing is, the pc will only turn off if I reset it. If I left it, the pc still continues regardless, so it must be a gpu issue.

I have contacted BFG, but I am not getting anywhere really. They've asked what PSU you have etc, even though I've already supplied them with it. They want actual voltages, which are all fine.

I don't know what to do really. I've tried inducing the problem again, by switching windows with videos playing in them quickly, and stuff like that.

It's all very frustrating.

EDIT- Also, forgot to mention. The newer card seems a bit more "flimsy" than the older one, if you know what I mean. The older card sits in either blue slots just fine, but the newer one can be adjusted around quite a bit, I don't know if the newer card is of inferior build quality or materials. I know the slots are fine, because the older card sits securely in all slots.

I disabled all power saving features in vista, and it doesnt seem to happen. I left my pc on all afternoon yesterday, and started using it again, like the last time it crashed, but didnt do anyting. Must be something to do with the vista power saving pcie linkstate or something?

Damn, so I guess I haven't solved it. I'll report here if I get it again though. Anyone with this card tried the latest driver yet?

I have the exact same problem with this piece of junk the BFG 9800 GTX+.

I have searched all over for a answer but all I have found so far was to turn of my peg link mode in my motherboard bios, I will give this a go later.

If you RMA this card Overclockers just send it back to you with a bill, so no help there.

Well, I've been in contact with BFG support, and they're absoloutely useless. They ask me if it happens with one card installed, well no, it happens with both installed. Then they ask me what PSU I have, then I get no answer. Three times I've initiated email support, and they never answer after a while. It's a joke.

I have had about the same problem with my Club3D 9800 GTX+. I kept getting artifacts at random moments, even when my system wasn't fully loaded and the temp was low (<40 celcius). Since I've installed the 178.24 driver I havent had the problem anymore. Every newer driver remains a problem.

Exact same problem here, everything was fine, until I installed the latest 181.22 drivers and it crashed three times today. I have now reverted back to the driver that came with the cd and touch wood, everything is ok.
On a side note, I have the EVGA SSC Version and my idle temps are 28c and never above 42c under load, just wondering wether this seems too low?

Even after disabling the peg mode in bios I was still getting this issue from time to time, not as bad as it was but was still happening.

I have finally cured the problem by under clocking my BFG 9800 GTX+ to stock timings. I see no reduction in performance but the crash and screen corruption has now vanished. :)

According to the EVGA website, it is an issue with the newest drivers, especially PhysX, try disabling it in nvidia control panel, a few now have no probs.

Yeah, the crashes/freezes only happened to me during periods of low loading. Never had any problems at all during gaming. Nw that's a great excuse to play games. "Sorry, can't come off this game, my computer might crash!" :p

Seems like it was a driver issue for me. BFG was useless in helping me though. Absoloutely USELESS. I don't normally complain, but I have to say their customer service is shocking. I started a support query 4 times, I reached the point where they verified my PSU was powerful enough, then I got no replies from then on. I am not buying BFG again. I am glad that it was a driver issue, however, if it had been a more serious issue I'd be mad.
