Basically i can't update my ati drivers unless i do a fresh instal of Vista.

Only programmes i have on my machine at present are Office, adobe, crysis, crysis warehead, COD5, FM 2009. I've trimmed my games down just to try and identify the cause but when i run CCC to update it freezes and tells me it failed to find hardware!

I have a feeling it maybe something to do with the updates which these games have downloaded. But it's doing my head in at present and seriously thinking of selling my two 4870's and get an Nvidia card

How are you installing the new drivers? A few ppl have had probs installing these also. I and a few found the following works fine.

Add/remove programmes> uninstal ati drivers, boot into safemode, run driver cleaner at least twice (or any app that'll clean drivers), reboot normally into windows, instal new version.

I've found in the past that doing that procedure usually works.:) One of the symptoms ppl get is CCC fails to load even though the video drivers appear to have installed fine.

No wonder OCUK sell so much stuff!

Its hardly rocket science, simply remove the old ati drivers, run a driver cleaner and install new drivers, if all else fails a simple format and install is hardly taxing on the old brain!

the issue is i shouldn't have to reinstal Vista every single time i want to update a driver. they should work fine regardless. Which means all saved games etc get removed which is also a pain

I've uninstalled from add/remove programmes, run driver sweeper etc etc but still no joy.

i have tried installing the ATI display drivers which windows update has but that also says failed.

i do have a feeeling it has happened since the new C++ 2005 has been out which is causing some issue.

I may do a fresh instal over the weekend and then try without instaling the C++.

you won't have to 'every time' something has clearly gone wrong..

try this..

disable system restore
add/remove the driver
reboot
run driver sweeper
reboot
install latest CAT's

if that fails, format (backup your savegames)
install

voila

doesn't take rocket appliances tbh

I had a disaster with CCC where it wouldn't start. I had to download the Windows Uninstaller add-on and install. Then reboot into safe mode, uninstall CCC using Add/Remove, driver sweep the drivers, use the Windows Uninstaller to remove all traces of CCC, driver swept again for good measure and finally reboot.

On rebooting, cancel the New Hardware dialogue and install CCC. Hopefully that will be alright.

As I say though, give the other programs a go and just get the driver as an alternative.

no it doesn't take rocket science or appliances to do a system restore thanks for pointing that out in a most patronising way but it's the whole issue and spending half a day a month backing up/formating/installing everything etc etc. it shouldn't need to be done when trying to update a simple driver.

cheers widge i will try this.

on ccc 9.3 i went into add/remove programmes and did a repair on CCC. this worked to install 9.4 but to instal 9.5 i had to format everything and it seems i'll have to do the same when installing 9.6.

i am half tempted to just keep 9.5 and not bother upgrading until something fundimental comes out in an update which i desperatly need

i said disable it, not use it..

wasn't trying to be patronising.

I said try the above, and if that fails, then format

this isn't the expected behaviour of 'all ati cards', so switching graphics card before trying a format is plain lunacy

Forgive me if I've misunderstood you but have you tried the downloading the drivers and CCC direct from the ATi Game site or are you trying to update through Vista..?
I had a similar sounding issue at the weekend when Vista update showed a 4870x2 display driver update, upon installing it it failed and I had to reinstall CCC and the display drivers again but this time I downloaded from the ATi site and had no issues..

What I do that has worked since time began :-

1- Uninstall drivers via control panel (express uninstall of all ATI software)
2- reboot
3- install new drivers
4- everything just works.

i have installed previouse versions of CCC straight over the top in the past without issue. Since 8.10. yet going from 9.3 to 9.4 in the same manner failed.

I've never used the vista ati drivers but thought i'd try just to check if they worked, which they didn't.

I've downloaded 9.6 from amd game and they wont work either so i'm not sure what has caused this to fail. i do believe it could be an update of a game which has knocked something out and caused ati to not instal anymore.

i've tried going through safe mode to remove drivers and then use driver cleaner etc and it still doesn't work.

It maybe an issue with Crysis and the patches i've doanloaded. that is the only new software i've had recently so maybe i do need to spend a day testing this out before being hasty and changing to Nvidia.

it's just frustrating how it used to work fine and suddenly started being an issue.

just to be sure also. Would crossfire cause an issue?
i.e. should i remove a card whilst updating or should they work regardless. I've only been on crossfire since April so that too could be an issue?

I hear a few people moaning about CCC. I think if you can get by with downloading Display Drivers only and something like ATi Tray Tools, you should be alright! That full wipe with Windows add-on was the only thing that solved my woes. Add/Remove still seems to leave traces of CCC in the system but that program gets rid of the lot.

could have formatted and reinstalled those apps by now, bite the bullet and format

buying a new graphics card to resolve this is insanity
