I have an oven in the house I've moved into that has all the markings rubbed off, and the letting agents are useless. I've tried and failed to find the manual/close up picture of the oven.

The oven looks exactly like this one:

The centre dial is a timer

The right one is the temperature, and seems exactly like this:

The left dial is the one we really need to know about. I imagine it's like this one as top is off, and one notch right is just the light, but it only has 7 positions and not 9 like this picture and I have no idea what the symbols mean anyway :(

Thanks for looking, hope one of you can help me out.

The symbols clockwise are: light, oven, ??,??, fan assisted oven, grill, hotter grill and fan assisted grill. If you've only got 7 positions I imagine it's missing the ones I don't know. Other than that the order is usually the same (light -> oven -> fan oven -> grill -> fan grill).

Grill is a square with dots at the top, I'd assume that dial has two grill settings. Oven on is a square with a fan shape inside. Combine these and I guess you've got a fan assisted grill? The light bulb is obviously light only.

Thanks for trying to help. My oven is not the same as the final picture I posted as it only has 7 notches not 9, so I really need an image of this oven or a manual for it.

Even if I knew what all the symbols meant it wouldn't help me at all really :(

It's always the same order as I said in my post. I don't understand what the problem is?

Have you actually tried the notches?

1. Off
2. A light will come on
3. It will get hot
4. It will get hot and a fan will come on
5. The grills at the top will come on
6. More grills at the top will come on
7. Grills at the top will come on, with, surprise, a fan

Let's be honest it's not rocket science

there are two symbols with fans.... Does your oven have a fan that comes on at any settings because if not then I would guess that it is those symbols you are missing.

It shouldn't be too hard to figure out without images. Turn the heating dial up and then test each position, leaving them for a few minutes to see if they heat up. The grill will be a red light from the top of the oven, fans are really noisy so easy to hear. If the red light doesn't come on but the oven heats up, that's your normal oven setting.

I think we have a winner

The thing rattles like buggery no matter what setting it's on so I can't tell if a fan is going as it seems like it's always going.

Check them out as you can get manual from them. Might be an idea to slide the oven out and write down the model / serial number that is more than likely written on a label on the back of the oven.

You can move it out by opening the door and you will find 2 screws either side. Take the screws out and then slide the oven out. Done this many times. Nearly all built in ovens are the same in the way they are fixed.

Granted, but the order is always the same, at least on any oven I've seen - there's no need for it be different.

Ignoring the fan noise you seem to be right. I get:

Off
Light on
hot
hot
element red
element red
element red + very hot

Thanks for the help, although the sarcasm wasn't needed :p
