Hi all, just want some information on if my current system will upgrade to the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad 965 Black Edition.
I aint sure what infor you need so I will write all what PC Wizard says

Here's what guts I have at present:

Mobo :Acer F690GVM
Chipset :AMD RS690/RS690M
Processor:AMD Phenom X4 9500 @ 2.2ghz
Ram :8gb
Graphics : ATI 5870

So If there's anyone who knows their computers I would be so grateful If you can please tell me if my system will or will not take the 965 Black Edition. Also does any one know why does AMD Overdrive fails to start all the time  when first installed it works then never works again always fails to start.

Thanks for your time and help.
Chris

I am doubtful that your system will take that cpu.

I am searching Acer to check for any BIOS upgrades.

if you can i would go for the 955! its cheaper and if you move the Multiplyer up by one youll have a 965 :D Simples!

so its not going to work with my current mobo?? what mobo wud I need to buy, that will work it? Im a complete noob to all this I wud need a mobo that hold 8gb and pci for gcard pefer 2 pci slots , if im buyin a new 1 cos i can have crossfire then on the ati 5870.
I have plenty of room in case I currently have the Cooler Master 922 just the mobo seems pants. Any suggestions wud be grateful this end I need help and im sure im in the right place for it

Ignore this man! 965 all the way.

What is your total budget for the upgrade?

<edit> having had a gander, contact you mobo maker to see if the board ll do am3, but it is doubtful. You will probably need a new board and ram.

If you have at least 800MHZ DDR2 I would get the following Crossfire capable motherboard:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-199-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1482

Buying 8GB of DDR3 RAM is going to cost at least £140 or more AFAIK.

Of course you would need a decent 600W PSU at least to run a pair of HD5870 1GB graphics cards.

I have a 600w psu and I have 8gb of ram, getting frustrated now atm becuase i aint getting the frames rates I want fsx still a pig on times and arma II is still like a pig aswell , My ati x1950 pro card I had worked Just as good as this 5870 its made very little diffence to my gaming so I aint impressed with spending £330 on It and getting very little resuslts.

Well my buget would be around £500 mark Ive alrdy spend a fortune in the last 2 weeks on 8gb ram and on the 5870 gcard also bought a coolermaster 922 case aswell. I think I need a new mobo and a new processor. And also I cant figure out how to over clock this processor as it has no options in bios to do it so im a bit peed off with all this atm seems like ive wasted my money big time.

If you have at least 800MHZ DDR2 and a decent PSU you could do a decent system upgrade for well under £500!

The cheapest and most efficient upgrade would be to get the following:

Phenom II X4 955BE ~ £122

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=cp-244-am

gigabyte ga-ma790x-ud3p ~ £86

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=mb-199-gi

it has an 8+2 phase vrm with very good cooling, all solid japanese made capacitors and is a ultra durable 3 motherboard.

the motherbaord can do symmetrical crossfire at pci-e 2.0 8/8x.

i would look at getting the following heatsink if you are overclocking:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=hs-008-ti

a phenom ii x4 at 2.6ghz to 2.8ghz will not bottleneck an hd5970:

http://www.legionhardware.com/document.php?id=869&p=12

the hd5970 is basically a pair of underclocked hd5870 cards on a single pcb.

ddr2 does not impact the performance of the current phenom ii processors it seems:

You could re-use all your other components!

To be honest, I don't think you really need more than 4GB of RAM...even for a 64-bit Operating System/Windows if you are only using for gaming....I'm using Win 7 64-bit and the max amount of RAM being used when I'm gaming is only 3Ghz (and that's including with like 15 tabs on my Firefox) out of my total 4GB. It is the speed and the timing of the RAMs that count when you have enough of them....any more they will just sit there and does nothing much.

From your spec, your slow CPU is definitely bottlenecking you 5870...back then I had the same problem when I upgrade my graphic card to 9800GTXs and it was bottlenecked by my AMD3500+, until I changed my motherboard and upgraded to Q6600.

Can you give the spec of you RAMs? 8GB of RAM is not really saying much...

Hi Marine, its not Ghz of ram but GB, its measured differently, just to ensure the OP isnt confused.

Sorry, you are right...it is GB. I know it is GB when I read, yet I type GHz when I write for some reason. Edited already thx.

On the sidenote: If he really does require changing motherboard as well, he might as well upgrade to i5 750. If I were him, I would upgrade to i5 750 as well as grabbing the the Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 or US3L motherboard and 4GB of DDR3 rams. As for the DDR2 rams, I'd sell them off (can probably get the same, if not more than the price paid when bought new couple years ago).

The ram I have is 2GB X 4 240-PIN UNBUFF DIMM 256MX64 DDR2 PC2-8500

I would go for the upgrade I suggested in post 8!

DDR2 1066MHZ and DDR3 1333MHZ(which is the optimal speed with low latencies for DDR3 with the Phenom II) show very little difference in performance with the current Phenom II processors.

Yep I think I might just go ahead with that upgrade in the next few weeks and hopfully all problems will be solved at last.

Thanks for all pointing me in the right direction :D
