Ok just out of idle curiosity does anyone else have a random problem where anno 1404 crashes for them?
It tends to be a random time in the game, and I could click somewhere and the whole game will vanish to desktop without an error. No warning or anything.
There is an error log of the last 3 times in the anno folder but I cant make head nor tail of it!

Found this on nvidia (boo) forums:

Anno 1404 is optimized for DirectX 10 (don’t worry, DX9 is also supported) and the game by default will launch in DX10 mode if supported hardware is detected. However it seems that DX10 mode causes crashes to desktop (CTD) even on some (not all) video hardware that are listed compatible with the game. If this is really the case, you can avoid the crash by forcing the game to run on DirectX 9. Downside of this method would be that you won’t see graphical enhancements of DX10 in game. Anyways here is how you can force DX9 mode in Anno 1404 by manually editing game configuration file:

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Ubisoft\anno1404\config\engine.ini (In Windows Vista this file is located in C:\Users\USERNAME\….)
Create a backup of engine.ini file. Open the engine.ini with a text editor such as Notepad.
Search for the tag <DirectXVersion>. You will find the line
<DirectXVersion>0</DirectXVersion>
Change this line so that it looks like this:
<DirectXVersion>9</DirectXVersion>
You game will now run in DirectX 9 mode. With luck, this might resolve your CTD issue too.

What gfx card you using and what are the temps like? Also if you have recently updated the gfx driver try the older one which you know is stable?

Also, you playing through steam or stand alone?

Could also try disabling the autosave feature? see if that affects it?

Patch 1.2 now out, you patched that aswell?

I found a nice stash of crash dumps in a folder which should explain it all, if I knew the game code or the language lol. Its so frustrating, it literally closes with no reason or error.

Edit:
Its standalone, and I've tried dx9 and dx10, windowed and fullscreen, low graphics and high and it still crashes randomly.

How do you repatch it? Do you mean uninstalling and reinstalling the game, or is there some way to apply the patches over the top of the current ones?

I run the original release version ( I think, I always cancel updates for ubi games as I cba to wait for it) and it's 100% stable for me so far, unlike 1701ad which CTD'd regularly for me, but 1404 playing in dx10 fine and not a single crash in 20 hrs of gameplay.

I'm now getting this problem with no message crashes to the desktop. I've had no problems for ~20 hours gameplay, but now in a continuous game I seem to get the crashes not long after starting the imperial cathedral, so I guess it may be graphical. Could this be due to running in DX10? Seems odd that it's been fine until now.

Year and a half old thread resurrection! Ouchy. Cant even begin to think what I did to solve this problem back then lol.

Haha, didn't even realise how old it was, just googled it and saw OcUK might have an answer. Atleast you did manage to sort it somehow!
