Hi was considering this case but some reviews/comments have suggested the fan can make a annoying whine when on full load ?

I plan on running 10 hdds (2tbs) , dvdwriter and Quadcore/6-8gig Ram with a beefy next gen ATI graphics card....

Been using an HX850W for quite a while now, 3 x hdd's, blu ray drive and spec in sig, found it to be an extremely quiet unit even at load.

Mine run`s silent never heard mine tbh and it`s a cracking psu btw very stable :)
You may be able to find the 1000 cheap if you look around if you need more power .

thx thats good to hear its not noisy... seems reports are varied, I wonder if anyone out theres got a really beefy system with 2 gpus and like 5-6 hdds, id wonder how the noise is at load then ?

Yeah was wondering this myself they both look spec for spec pretty much same, accept the older Corsair has a 135mm more silent fan and the newer one has a 120mm fan, im baffeled why they would downgrade the fan not unless Corsair are aware of some Noise issues so perhaps they used a more high quality 120mm fan....

May have to do some further digging on Corsair forums someone must know the truth !:D

Pretty sure that if you go by anecdotal evidence alone you will find two things. Most people with the PSU are very happy with it and most people will find it silent and have other hardware that will probably make more noise than the Corsair. Youw will also find that as with most components, there will be some duds and some units will just not be as silent as others. However that is a risk you take with most things and if it is really noisy, it is most likely an aberration and you can RMA.

Yeah I know its a bit of a hit and miss, ive read a review on the new AX 850 and it looks good :

Silence is there but theres no hx 850 review.... surely a 135mm fan vs a 120mm fan the larger ones both more silent and pushing more air so if the ax850 is both newer and better why downgrade the fan.....

Ive posted on Corsiar forums... so will perhaps find out

Hard to decide as always :)

We (OLDPHART, clone and I) can only give you the knowledge of our own experience and not what it says in a review recommended by a third party :)

HX = very quiet

AX? = not a clue

EDIT

The rest of your gear will make more noise than the PSU fan!

A couple of things...
The AX 850 has substantially larger and better heatsinks fitted in the PSU compared to the HX. This is why the unit has a smaller fan I would imagine.
I do remember reading that the 120mm the AX uses is a very good one which is a good.
The AX also controls the speed the fan runs at and from what I have read on most PC's that are idling the fan will not even be working. Very doubtful you will ever even have it under enough load to hear the high speed of it.

For quite a small amount more the AX certainly seems to be the better value for money offer over the HX. (even if they are both brilliant performers)

If noise is your issue then go for the AX and don't worry about it having a smaller fan. The superior heatsinks make up for it :)

Have owned 2 Corsair psu's both were silent. Friend has a HX750 and thats also probably the quietest part of his system, it's most likely to be in any modern system tbh.

Yep, even with the sli setup i had till yesterday, the HX850 didnt get any louder at load than with the various single cards ive used with it.
