Does anyone know how you send the audio through the HDMI output on a GTX 480/580 card ??

With my GTX 275 i had to connect a small audio cable from the motherboard to the gtx 275 card..But the 480/580 says the audio Input for HDMI is Internal

I'm pretty sure you had to connect the little cable on the 480, have you checked the cards to see if there's a little socket for that cable?

Faff ain't it, why haven't they sorted that now?

Surely it's just straight through HDMI on the newer gen cards?

Googling about it looks like the HDMI audio is done internally just like the ATi cards with a seperate driver

Well there is absoloutely no spdif connector on the 480 or 580 afaik

I Only got the 580 right now and there no audio socket on it from what i can see..

99.9% certain it's done internally, give it a ago?

It is, just connect the hdmi to tv or monitor and set it in sound options in windows 7.

I thought the 4xx and 5xx had their own internal sound card (Like AMD), you would need to select that as the output as opposed to your motherboard or add in sound card though.

When i installed the latest drivers for my 480 today it has the option for audio drivers, im guessing this is when using hdmi

well for my ati 6870

you just select it in windows 7
nothing to mess around with connectors or cables

for me its control panel, sounds and select hdmi audio

I still haven't been able to try it yet as am still waiting for my HTPC case to arrive


Now to next question
Would the audio be better from the GPU card onboard audio chip or the motherboard onboard audio chip ??
As i be feeding the audio through my AV amp to a 5.1 speaker setup..

From the little research I did a while ago means using HDMI means you can't get surround sound from games unless they support special formats. When I get my receiver I will use HDMI for Bluray films and then use analog from my Asus D2X.

I can confirm I'm getting sound through DVI with a DVI to HDMI adapter. Crystal clear I just select my tv from the sound panel!
