PS3 to Dell U2312HM - Black screen

Hardware I'm using:
Dell U2312HM (1920x1080, and its DVI input is HDCP compliant)
PS3 Slim 120GB
HDMI to DVI cable

When I connect all of this up and power on the PS3, I either get a black screen or the monitor doesn't even detect an input signal. The cable works just fine from my PC to the monitor, and even with an Xbox 360. I can only assume that my issue lies with the HDCP handshaking process.

I've done the following countless times:

  • Turned PS3 on and off, turned monitor on and off. Whilst off, I reconnected all cables. This was to see if the issue was HDCP handshaking.
  • Used a TV to ensure that the PS3 was outputting via HDMI, and at only 1080p, 720p and 576p. My monitor should support these video signals.
  • Held down the power button until a beep, to reset video settings
  • Reset all settings on both the monitor and PS3

I really don't know what to do after all that. My only areas of concern is the cable; it could be interfering with HDCP... but I have no proof. I also don't have the money to experiment with lots of other cables, but would be happy buying one that I know will work.

Any thoughts on my problem? Does my monitor just hate the PS3 (or vice versa)? Or is a cheap cable the issue? To those who attempt to help me: you have my regards.

Edit: Should this be in the Monitors section?

Did you hold it down till it turned off though?

From standby, just press and hold power it will beep a few times then turn off.. then turn it back on, should work

Unfortunately, this does not work. The first time I did this, I got only a black screen. When I tried it again, the monitor didn't even detect an input.

Also, having tried the Xbox again, it suddenly doesn't output via the HDMI to DVI cable... but it still works for my PC. Should I just buy a new cable?

i had a similar issue with my last monitor (Hanns G 27') where HDCP just didnt work. I wouldn't mess around buying new cables, just contact Dell and let them replace it NBD.

You had your monitor replaced, and it solved your problem?

the Hanns G?, no, they sent me another duff one funnily enough (I replaced it with a Dell U2711). But dell will do a next business day swap out as long as its in warranty just enter your service tag into Dell's site. Oh, and you might want to edit out the competitor link from your other post :).

Well, I guess I'll try and get the monitor replaced by Dell. Thanks for the support :)

I've got my PS3 hooked up to a Dell U2312HM. It sounds like u may have a duff monitor as mine works fine with an HDMI to DVI-D cable so the monitor definitely supports HDCP. Games and Blu-rays work fine. I run my monitor through an HDMI switch that indicates when the PS3 resets/rechecks the HDCP signal when playing a game and blu ray, works every time.

Have u tried the display port socket? Maybe try with a display port to HDMI cable? Also, have u set the PS3 to output just 1080p by unchecking the tick box for lower res's (720p and 480)?

Risky but check google on accessing the manufacturers settings hidden in the monitor, maybe find a guide that details if there is a setting for HDCP? Maybe it's disabled some how?

Can't think of anything else other than the monitor is busted and needs replacing.

So essentially, the HDCP handshaking is done between the HDMI switcher and the PS3, is successful, and therefore passes a video signal through it to the monitor? I don't know much about HDCP

I've made sure the PS3 is outputting only 576p, 720p, and 1080p. And I could try HDMI to DP...

Couldn't find anything about HDCP :(

Finally, do you happen to have a PS3 fat? I read something interesting on the Dell forums: link

Yeah, the switcher just forwards the hand shaking on from the ps3 to the monitor, it just indicates with a blue LED when handshaking was successful.

Very interesting read, I do have a fat ps3, had it for years so it looks like newer slim versions don't have "full" capability connecting to different kinds of screens other than HDTV's, I found this strange cos I always thought that there was only one 'type' of HDCP. I thought monitors/HDTV's either had it or they didn't.

Did I read somewhere in that link that a genuine Sony cable worked and an unbranded one didn't?

No, you're both saying different things here.
Indeed, we're not :p According to Wikipedia, the switchbox is likely a "repeater", meaning it re-encrypts the signal when outputting. If it didn't, it would probably break some laws.

Nevertheless, if the branded HDMI to DVI cable I ordered doesn't work, I may try a Sony HDMI cable. I'd still need a HDMI to DVI converter though, which could screw the whole thing up again, making my efforts (and money) all for naught.

Thanks again for all the replies, I appreciate the support. Otherwise, I may have gone insane :)

Well, guess what. I bought a slightly more premium branded HDMI to DVI cable and it worked. Avoid cheap or brandless cables if you want something reliable (which is common sense, really).

Regardless; thank you all for your support. It was a very frustrating time for me, and y'all made it far less aggravating. Thanks again!

Amazing, actual proof that cheap cables really are worse than higher quality ones!, not just worse, some dont even work at all! Ive seen/read countless debates on the net about how a cheapo £2.99 hdmi cable from Tesco does the same job as a £20 one because its 'digital' and isnt the same as the old analogue cables like scart etc.

Well, I will always remember this thread when buying cables in the future as it still seems that you get what you pay for.

Glad you got it sorted in the end though Azure. I was getting concerned that if my PS3 ever decided to blow up, I'd have to research into which version PS3 to get as a replacement cos it may not work with my U2312HM instead of just getting the latest slim, but thankfully all seems ok.

Same thing happened with my sis in laws' PS3 I told her to get the cheapest HDMI cable she could find so she got one for 10 euro but it didn't work she got it replaced with another and it still didn't work, nor did my cheap cable which worked perfectly on my fat old PS3 (her's is slim) she had to fork out for a 15 euro "high speed" cable for it to work.

Also the problem I had with my fat PS3 was that when I used a HDMI then "downgraded" to a scart I got a blank screen I had to switch the output to 576 on the HDMI then change to scart. Nothing to do with your specific problem but just thought I'd post.

I had the exact problem with my old Dell 2407 - had them replace the monitor and it was fine.

Azure Sine :- Slightly OT question. I'm thinking of getting a Dell U2312HM as one of my monitors is on its way out.

I just wondered how games performed on the panel. On paper I should be noticing some lag/bluring but from what I've been hearing all accross the net, the panel is pretty decent for games - Obviously not in the same league as 120hz panels. Also, how are you re-directing sound from the PS3 since the monitor has no speakers.

Thanks,
Mark
