Gigabyte Radeon HD7850 OC 2Gb - Black screen/Sound loop

Hi,

I have been having huge issues with my graphics card and it seems I am not the only one in this boat. As soon as I start to play games, the game will run completely smoothly for 10-60 minutes and then just crash out to a black screen and a buzzing sound will continue eventually ending in losing connection to my monitor and a hard reset will fix the issue. I have had the issue occur in Sleeping Dogs and League of Legends (only once in LoL). I don't receive any artefacts, it will look completely normal and smooth up until the second it happens.

Exactly like this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8erBOaOBck.

Once, I have had solid colour and vertical lines appear on the screen but again I had to hard reset.

There have also been other similar threads on it:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18477859&highlight=7850+black+screen and http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18476678&highlight=7850+black+screen

I have asked for an RMA so I have that ready but I just want to make sure that this is the correct thing to do because I don't want to get stung for charges if they don't find something wrong!

So far the steps I have taken are as follows:

- Updated the BIOS to the latest version

- Completely uninstalled the drivers and had a fresh install

- Ran Furmark - temperature's didn't exceed 63 degrees.

- Monitored CPU temperature and I have yet to see it go past 45 degrees.

- Reduced the clock speed to the standard 860Mhz

- Ran Heaven benchmark - crashed twice at the 975Mhz but made it through at 860. I thought it was fixed but as soon as I went into a game within 10 minutes it had crashed at 860.

- Ran Memtest over night and it came back with no errors.

None of the above fixes seemed to work, so don't know what to try next!

My system is as follows:

Does anyone have any ideas? I am quite happy to send it back, it is still within 28 days.

Also on the RMA ticket it says that my desired action is to replace, does anyone know if I can get this changed to a refund or swap it out for an nVidia card - people don't seem to be having such issues so am thinking of just switching.

Thanks for any help you can give, will be much appreciated :)

Yes! I've got exactly this.

I'm sending mine in for RMA, as I've noticed that when it black-screens, the fans on the card itself will stop spinning, which to me screams that it's a graphics problem. I've also had the vertical lines happen once, and in that instance the sound didn't loop - the game stopped but other applications worked fine.

I've even tried downgrading the drivers to an older version, to no avail.

Sorry if this hasn't been that helpful, just thought you should now that there's yet another person with this issue.

Could this be why there are a lot of Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7850 OC Windforce 2X in the clearance for £129.99 ?

I was wondering whether to order one tomorrow then saw this. It could be an issue between them and the Z77 chipset what do you have xCP23x ?

Did you set amd power control slider to 20% in ccc/overdrive settings?

Set mine to 20% didnt make any difference.

Updated to 13.2 beta drivers from AMD website.
Set Power Control to 10%
Updated to F5_A BIOS.
So far no crash.

Additional.

I did a lot of searching last night and the black screen crash or the grey screen with vertical lines crash goes back at least to the 5xxx series. You can find loads of screenshots of the exact same grey error posted. What I do not understand is how the same grey crash spans 5xxx, 6xxx and 7xxx series cards ?

I just got the 7850 as I wanted something cheaper and cooler to run. Last AMD card I had was the 4870 and it was brill. Then I went nvidia 460, 560, 570, 580 and never had bad problems. Switch to AMD and grey bsod syndrome.

I even found a guy on YouTube modding the BIOS to solve the issue and provided a service offering to do it for you.

Hopefully the BIOS update will have solved it (I also ticked overdrive again in CCC) but if not I think the card is going back and I will never touch AMD again!

actually just discovered via GPU Tweak somehow my voltage had changed to 1138mv. Click default sets it to 1175mv again and so far no crashes.

I have the Z77 chipset, didn't even think there could be issues between the card and that.

Also, about the power/voltage, the power slider doesn't seem to stop the crashing, and my voltage is locked (greyed out in afterburner, apparently that's a gigabyte thing).

yh thats very common if using overclocking software,it wont restore back to default gpu voltage unless you manually click default/save/exit

it will crash the gpu if too much voltage same as too little

fed up faff in about its going back tomorrow.

Never going to buy AMD ever again, Lesson learnt. Stick to what you know.

naw it just took longer to crash. At first it was crashing within first few minutes. Then when I reset the voltage to 1175mv it lasted a bit longer but then crashed.

There is some bad voltage to clock speed ratios somewhere and I bet if I played about with it long enough I could find the sweetspot where it is stable. However you shouldnt really have to should you.

Its also a pre-overclocked card and first one I have bought that is normally I am happy with the default reference and do it myself but I just wanted something that would be adequate for my needs and just work.

The AMD 7850 is not it.

The day I got it crashes and crashes.

I've seen Sapphire users and HIS users have same issue. I've also seen 5850 users have the issue. If you search enough you can see examples over the whole 5xxx to 7xxx range.
I have noticed it doesnt seem to affect the 7870, 7950 and 7970 as much. 7850 definitely.

Its gone back now I've bought nvidia again.

How long have you been running it? Have you really pushed it gaming yet?

Had it for a fair few months, I would say it has been pushed yeah.

Running 1920x1080 max graphics on farcry 3, if that is not pushing it then x2 1920x1080 monitors running x2 eve clients under max graphics.

Seems to run just fine lol.

ive had exactly the same problem, had it RMAd, new one has turned up and does exactly the same. My rig runs perfectly with an old 4850 in it, but this seems to be a major problem for people with this card...looking to RMA this one as well and get a different card i think :(
