Hi all,

As you can probably see this is my second thread I have created in the monitor section of the forums.

I have pretty much changed my mind and decided that for my new monitors I am going to have one 27inch monitor in the middle of my setup and 1-2 23/24inch monitors either side.

The 27inch will be used for general use and gaming. The other monitors will be used for general use. I have been looking at the two monitors above which I believe use IPS and PLS technology respectively.

What are peoples views on these two screens? Which one should I go with? It's gaming that I am worried about so I am open to other suggestions. I'm not a massive PC gamer but I do want it to be reasonable when I am playing.

Thanks :)

I've got the Dell and it's great! No ghosting so far as I can tell and the build qualities top.

Dell's customer service is great -- I got my old U2312HM down from the loft to sell but it seems to have developed dead pixels whilst in storage ... rang them up yesterday and a replacement is arriving monday!

Second that! I'm a u2713hm owner and its an excellent monitor and the best £419 I have spent in a long time. build quality is excellent and the warranty service is a huge piece of mind for me-point proven when on day of delivery I noticed heavy backlight bleed and one quick phonecall later and they sending a new one to swap on doorstep.....2 working days!

Don't get the Dell. First one started flashing like crazy got a replacement. Now this second the replacement literally started to gain image retention.

And the manufacturing dates if you can remember them kitkat9933?

There have been several quality control issues for both the U2713HM and PB278Q. It seems that the newest revisions of both don't suffer from these to such an extent but there are always outliers.

You get the usual cases of backlight bleed and uniformity issues (hit and miss as always) for both but there have been some fairly extreme examples. I would say if anything more extreme on the ASUS. The Dell may suffer additional issues such as the aforementioned cross-hatching (not something I'd worry about for your uses) and image retention in some cases. Image retention can be ironed out using the 'LCD conditioning' feature of the OSD but that can take some time and be frustrating if you have to do it.

This is not an issue specific just to the Dell, but it does seem to be something related to certain IPS panels and not present on PLS panels. The ASUS uses a Samsung PLS panel, incidentally. Performance is essentially very similar on both which is why you will be finding it so tough to choose between them. For colour-critical work I wouldn't rate the ASUS quite as highly because it doesn't feature sRGB emulation and has a native colour gamut extending a bit beyond sRGB. The Dell also has an sRGB+ gamut but features an effective sRGB emulation mode. For your uses that isn't an issue, though.

The image is nice and rich with excellent shade variety and all the IPS/PLS goodness you could hope for on both of these. They make excellent general purpose monitors. They are also fairly similar when it comes to responsiveness, although the ASUS has a bit of an edge here with more configurable pixel overdrive and perhaps slightly better performance in some modes than the Dell.

Some other potential things to be aware of are that Dell are generally easier to work with when it comes to replacement and customer service. ASUS will hold their side of the bargain (eventually), though. The ASUS uses PWM to dim the backlight which can cause a flickering that some users are sensitive to. The Dell doesn't. All in all a tough choice but you'll be pleased with either, I'm sure. Unless you are sensitive to and bothered by PWM of course.

Thanks for the detailed response as always. Everything you say makes sense and I think does explain why I am having a tough time.

One thing I did read was with regards to WQHD I think. This is referring to the pixel count of these monitors I believe. The article was saying how it could be better to wait because at the moment no monitor at this pixel density is that good. However this is not a new thing is it? 2560x1440 has been around for a while now as far as I am aware?

Please correct me if I am wrong :)

Thanks!

2560 x 1440 has been around for a while and will stick around for a while. The pixel density is actually excellent, but of course it depends what you're comparing it with. These huge 55" 4K TVs that people are so in awe of actually have a significantly lower pixel density than a 27" WQHD monitor. It's a while yet before we'll see those sorts of resolutions whittle their way down to monitors of this kind of size. And moreover there may not be a call for this to happen more broadly due to the graphical horsepower required.

Is the lag on these monitors going to be noticed when playing games? This is one of the things that worries me most. I mean I am only an occasional gamer on PC but I do want it to be reasonable when I'm playing.

Thanks :)

Thanks for all of the responses.

How recent was this kitkat9933?

First one went after about 3 weeks. Replacement after a week. Don't get me wrongs while they worked they were good monitors. Don't notice lag in games and the AG coating works in a way it doesn't reduce quality of the screen.

I have an image of the image retention but the picture doesn't really show it. Basically I was on ventrilo for a few minutes, closed the window down and it stayed on the screen with half opacity for about 2 hours. Now a lot of things have started to be retained on the screen.

Have you returned again?

Also another thing I have been thinking of is my graphics card which is 6870. I'm not going to be able to run games at max settings very well at this resolution am I?

Thanks :)

Had my 2713HM for about a month and could not be happier fantastic screen, nice 3 year warranty and I paid a cracking price when they were on offer.
