Hi,

Just looking for some help on setup as my old router is on its last legs, so looking to get things updated with new router and modems.

Current setup:

Modem/Router feeding - Main PC, A/V box, WDTV & NAS

Now currently I'm on ADSL however within the next few years Jersey is going to have FTTH available so was wondering my best route.

So either:
Cheap ADSL2 modem into RT-AC66U then change modem when fibre becomes available

or

Get Asus N55U and swap over to a FTTx/Router once its available.

However, the N55U seems to be having quite a few firmwire problems.

I'm fairly sure that with the correct firmware the N55U is capable of using one of its LAN ports for the WAN interface.

Assuming this is true, which someone will hopefully confirm, you could use it for ADSL now and continue using it once you get FTTC.

Right now the maximum WAN > LAN throughput with PPPoE is ~200Mbps on the ASUS RT-N66U and AC66U. Will be perfect for FTTC but it can't cope with FTTH speeds. A router with a faster CPU or hardware NAT is needed for FTTH.

According to the changelog the ASUS RT-N56U and N65U with Padavan's firmware installed can support WAN > LAN throughput with PPPoE up to ~900Mbps thanks to the built in hardware NAT.

Changes to firmware ver. 1.1.2.1-002:
----------------------------------------------------------
- Activated complete HW_NAT offload on both directions for WAN PPPoE (~900 Mbit/s) with 2xRGMII connection scheme.

This thread is also worth a read regarding FTTH compatible routers: http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/fibre/f/4200391-recommended-router-for-fttp-330-mbps.html?vc=1
