Hello chaps,

I have a stock latest firmware Asus RT-N56U. Just wondering what others have done with this? as i understand lots of custom firmware and the ability to backup to hard drives and printers? these firmwares and features worth doing ? any advise?

just download and unpack, then browse to that file from router interface

Warning

If your current firmware version is 1.1.2.2-006 or lower, it is absolutely
necessary to save your settings to a .CFG file using WebGUI BEFORE
upgrading to a newer version. After the upgrade, restore your settings
from the saved .CFG file in a usual way.

It is worth doing this anyway :)

ok flashed it!

seem to be up and running ok, just looking through the options and seeing what is what. i'm a bit confused on how the 5g and normal wifi works, as it's showing now when i scan for wifi networks i have two asus and asus5g... ??????

5g has generally better bandwidth but the signal degrades quicker over distance and through walls. Also not all devices, especially older ones, can connect to it.

Very tempted to get this on the today only deal. Would it make an excellent replacement for my Technicolor TG-582n that I use with Plusnet fibre? Need to get a good strong signal for wifi streaming 1080p.

It's a solid router, and for the web price its on for today, its really a no brainer!

Yeah had mine for little over a year and a half and it has crashed once in the entire time of me owning it. Very solid router indeed with some great throughput speeds on both wireless and wired connections.

since adding the custom firmware and a 32gb usb drive as a shared network drive this has been amazing. it was before but i recommend the above frmware linked in a few posts up

Really appreciate the replies all. I have placed an order and saved that web page :)

Is this the recommended f/w that you are all running?

version 3.0.3.5-055

Looking forward to some more stable wifi in my house. Really keen to see how 5GHz pans out too but am not really clued up on what can and cannot take advantage of it. The kind of wifi devices I have are:

2 x Touchpads
1 x Nexus 7
2 x Netbooks
1 x work laptop (Lenovo W540)
1 x TP-Link Range Extender (TL-WA850RE)
6 x Sonos items
1 x PS3
1 x Sky HD wifi thingy
1 x HTC Evo 3D

And that's about it really but not sure if any of it can take advantage of 5GHz.

Not sure if there is any huge benefit to the 32GB shared drive as I run a Synology DS410 but certainly open to new benefits :)
