Hi All,

Me again,

i wondered if anyone has seen this, as some of you will be aware i got a 290 @ christmas and had a few issues.

The card has never really settled in properly but works fine on games.

my pc is rarely turned off and sometimes i come down in the morning and the pc has black screened and the fans are sitting at full speed.

i also appear to randomly be getting blocks on the screen which is odd.

i am using the latest ati drivers and dual 1080 monitors.

msi afterburner is sitting @ default settings with the fan speed going up in 10% increments @ 10 degrees.

anyone got any tips or suggestions where i should be looking?

Many Thanks

Nix

last night i went back to 13.12 and it seems to have stopped the blocks ( i think it called artifacts) and if im thinking correctly it only started when i updated to the new (i think beta driver)

i think i will invest in one of the new coolers for the card and see how it goes.

anoy other tips are always welcome. for the record black screens are not always a faulty card as last time we spoke about this it was a psu issue.

it doesnt happen a lot and im more inclined to think its a driver issue maybe?

hopefully i can stop them.

as mentioned the card is fine during gaming.

if the fans are at minimum during idle the card runs @ 80 degrees which it needs to be higher imo?

Reading through it again, your issue is may not be the "black screen" issue which most people come across (memory related), since you mentioned black screen with fan at 100% (which is sounds like unstable clock and driver crash) and artifacting would point to the card is not getting enough voltage.

Let's see how it goes with the new driver...if you still get the issue mentioned above, you could try giving the voltage a tiny bump using MSI Afterburner etc to see if it stop those issues from occuring.

Even at low fan speed, the card shouldn't be as high as 80C at idle...can you check to make sure the card is downclocking while in idle state?

80C is pretty consistent with what my primary 290 wanders around when idle/surfing/non-gaming. It'll be lower if you're running one screen, but as the OP is running multi-monitor his memory won't downclock so the increased idle temps.

bummer i came home from work and it was blacked out again @ idle but i have not seen any artifact.

which voltage shall i adjust and how much is a tiny bump??

Many Thanks for your assistance guys you are brill at what you do so keep up the good work.

In all honesty mate, if your card isn't stable at stock clocks I would definitely say to return it. You've paid good money for the card, why should you settle for one that you have to alter/underclock/overvolt to get running as it should? There's nothing more frustrating than an unstable PC, so I would definitely say it's worth the few days without a GPU in order to get one that works properly and can be relied upon.

ok i got a new card they sent over a power colour r290

i have been having a few problems so i decided to reformat the machine and now it is worse than ever,

i wish i had never bought this card as it has turned a stable pc is to a pile of sh*te.

it has randomly blue screened and rebooted twice in the last half hour sitting idle with me on the sofa.

my current mobo is Asus P8Z68-V GEN3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard

i am now at my wits end it has crashed so many times today its driving me nuts.

does anyone have this card working stable and if so what motherboard do you have,

i am prepared to throw money at this to get it running smooth again as its the only option i have left.

please help.

Blue screen and reboots doesn't sound GPU related in my experience. Could you try running your CPU at stock speeds just to rule the overclock out as a source of these issues? It is possible to change a stable OC to an unstable one by changing any component, so it could be the change in GPU to the 290 has just tipped your setup over the edge a little. I found when changing my 7970s to 290s that I needed to up my LLC in the BIOS a notch otherwise I was getting occasional BSOD at idle on desktop. Weird, but it happens.

If you still have issues with your CPU at stock, then at least that's one thing we can tick off the list of potential causes.

it is stock :( i havent touched a thing apart from the fan settings.

what is the LLC?

this system has been stable since 2011 with my 5850 in it .

Many thanks for your help.

Sorry, misread your signature and thought you were running your CPU overclocked. Apologies :(

Don't mess with your BIOS settings just yet - that was just what I needed to do on my overclock and every one's a little different, but as you're running stock you shouldn't need to play with it.

Do you remember what error codes the BSOD gave? That might give some more knowledgeable people than me (most of them) and idea where to look for potential issues.
