Improved reliability and better overclocking are possible by using only high-polymer, aluminum capacitors which posses far superior characteristics than regular aluminum capacitor for a longer product life. When operational temperatures drop by 20°C, the product life span is extended by a factor of ten, when the operational temperature increases by 20°C, the product life span only decreases by 10%.
Along the edge of the card the PCB is extended and one of the copper layers left exposed. An additional heatsink mounted directly to this copper layer allows heat absorbed into the PCB from the GPU and other components to be transferred to the heatsink and cooled by the airflow. This feature alone can reduce core temperature by 2 degree C.

The Results!
As you can see from the results, the GTX 970 is the real star offering GTX 780 OC beating performance out of the box with relative ease, then add in the huge overclocking ability, we achieved 1500MHz core with stock voltage and stock fan speed. We did some later testing using higher voltage and full fan speed and we were achieving around 1600MHz core, that is getting into the realms of upto a 40% overclock on the core and we've not experienced such great overclocking ability in cards for a very long time. The card ran exceptionally cool, never seeing over 60c under-load and remaining relatively quiet and add in the fact this card consumes less than 150W typically and will happily run on a decent 450W power supply is really quite an achievement. When the 970 was overclocked to beyond 1500MHz core and 8000MHz memory it was beating 780Ti and even close to matching stock 980 performance, again such an amazing achievement for a card which cost little over £250. First time I've said this but NVIDIA and great value for money in the same sentence!
Now onto the GTX 980, this card could so easily carry a £599 price point and it would still sell, the cooler, design, quality is simply oozing out of this card, easily the best reference design cooler/card NVIDIA have designed yet. Letting the card maintain itself it will run upto around 80c under-load in absolute silence. Even if you set the fan to 100% the noise levels are still acceptable and it will struggle to go beyond 60c. Then again add in the fact this card consumes around 180W you can quite easily power it with a decent 500W PSU.
People were expecting performance on the new cards to be poor, as they just look at the paper figures which shows less cores and smaller memory inter-face, yet fact is this is a whole new architecture which is far more efficient and as such the GTX 970 easily out performs GTX 780 at everything and the GTX 980 gives a 780Ti a real good fight, but once we start to include overclocking the GTX 980 absolutely destroys the 780Ti, these things are clocking to beyond 1500MHz core with ease, I've had mine upto 1600MHz core, that is with just +87mv and the stock cooler. Give these cards +200mv and a waterblock and I think we will see some 1650-1750MHz core clocks and when 8 Pack gets one 2000MHz+ shall be demolished with ease!

I am thoroughly impressed with the 9xx series, far more than I was with 7xx series as they bring so much to the table. They are not only faster, they are the best cards for overclocking I have ever tested, these things clock like crazy on the cores it is untrue. Then the low power consumption, low noise, increased memory to 4GB really are the icing on the cake which make these cards the total package. Oh and lets not forget the price, the 970 cost less than a 780 and absolutely slaughters it in every aspect. Then the 980 comfortably beats the 780Ti and again it cost less yet your getting so much more in terms of a complete package and future proofing.

The Results!
As you can see from the results, the GTX 970 is the real star offering GTX 780 OC beating performance out of the box with relative ease, then add in the huge overclocking ability, we achieved 1500MHz core with stock voltage and stock fan speed. We did some later testing using higher voltage and full fan speed and we were achieving around 1600MHz core, that is getting into the realms of upto a 40% overclock on the core and we've not experienced such great overclocking ability in cards for a very long time. The card ran exceptionally cool, never seeing over 60c under-load and remaining relatively quiet and add in the fact this card consumes less than 150W typically and will happily run on a decent 450W power supply is really quite an achievement. When the 970 was overclocked to beyond 1500MHz core and 8000MHz memory it was beating 780Ti and even close to matching stock 980 performance, again such an amazing achievement for a card which cost little over £250. First time I've said this but NVIDIA and great value for money in the same sentence!
Now onto the GTX 980, this card could so easily carry a £599 price point and it would still sell, the cooler, design, quality is simply oozing out of this card, easily the best reference design cooler/card NVIDIA have designed yet. Letting the card maintain itself it will run upto around 80c under-load in absolute silence. Even if you set the fan to 100% the noise levels are still acceptable and it will struggle to go beyond 60c. Then again add in the fact this card consumes around 180W you can quite easily power it with a decent 500W PSU.
People were expecting performance on the new cards to be poor, as they just look at the paper figures which shows less cores and smaller memory inter-face, yet fact is this is a whole new architecture which is far more efficient and as such the GTX 970 easily out performs GTX 780 at everything and the GTX 980 gives a 780Ti a real good fight, but once we start to include overclocking the GTX 980 absolutely destroys the 780Ti, these things are clocking to beyond 1500MHz core with ease, I've had mine upto 1600MHz core, that is with just +87mv and the stock cooler. Give these cards +200mv and a waterblock and I think we will see some 1650-1750MHz core clocks and when 8 Pack gets one 2000MHz+ shall be demolished with ease!
Conclusion
- 970 offers GTX 780 beating performance out the box and 780Ti when overclocked at MUCH LOWER PRICE POINT
- 980 offers GTX 780Ti performance and better out the box with huge overclocking ability
- 4GB vs 3GB, better for 4k gaming
- Incredibly low power consumption
- Incredibly cool running and silent operation

- If you own a 780Ti, not a great upgrade unless you love overclocking, but 6xx series and below owners this is the upgrade you've being waiting for!!!!!

I am thoroughly impressed with the 9xx series, far more than I was with 7xx series as they bring so much to the table. They are not only faster, they are the best cards for overclocking I have ever tested, these things clock like crazy on the cores it is untrue. Then the low power consumption, low noise, increased memory to 4GB really are the icing on the cake which make these cards the total package. Oh and lets not forget the price, the 970 cost less than a 780 and absolutely slaughters it in every aspect. Then the 980 comfortably beats the 780Ti and again it cost less yet your getting so much more in terms of a complete package and future proofing.
