Blackwell gpus

Nvidia are well and truly cemented in now with their vast resources and turnover, only way for AMD to get more marketshare would be for government intervention or for Nvidia to just leave the consumer gfx market (both possible at this point). AMD will be fighting with Intel over the scraps :D
AMD struggle to gain traction as they price to close to Nvidia while offering worse features, had they originally come to market a year ago with cards like the 7900XT/7900XTX priced at £600-800 and got the 7800XT out the door earlier at £400 then they would have done really well this generation.

From a consumer stand point, with both companies asking well over the odds for their products then if you have to pay the high price then you might as well go with Nvidia for the superior feature set even though VRAM may become a concern down the line.

Yep, was happy enough with my 7900XT at £699 but the launch price was a joke, even £750 now is a bit much. (and the GRE at ~530 is far more compelling)
The only thing that would tempt me to move at the moment is a used 4090 at around £700-750, once the new cards are released. (That may be unrealistic, but I'm hoping that's about where they'll land, depending on 5xxx pricing, and only if I can still get around £400 for my XT - otherwise I'll probably sit out a gen or 2)

Not long now for a 5090

start selling your 4090 so u can get a good price, as when the 5090 releases, 4090 will probably go below one thousand Dollars/Pounds/Euros (all the same now)
All jokes aside, this is a terrible idea. 5090 likely to be extremely limited stock, likely to be the fastest card on release, maybe you get lucky with bots/stock checker etc.

Only sell the 4090 when you can actually buy the 5090. The second hand value dropping by £200 is irrelevant if you're waiting 3-4 months without a GPU.

Also, assuming the 5080 is £1,000 and matches the 4090 for performance perfectly (highly unlikely), it will have 16gb VRAM, so 4090 should still command a premium for the 24GB.

I kind of expect the 5080 to be slower than the 4090, but we'll see.

Considering the 5090 will be priced through the roof (I do not expect it launching for anything below £2000), I don't think stock will be an issue.

Nvidia also does not have AMD to worry about so they can do whatever they want with Blackwell.

Is the 4080 slower than a 3090?

The correct solution is to have a second GPU. Anyone who upgrades frequently and wants to maximise resale keeps a spare GPU, because you want to sell your GPU before the new one comes out and then you use your backup GPU so the PC still runs in the meantime and you can do light gaming, an iGPU can work to but something like a rtx2060 will do the job

Even the 4070 Ti isn't slower
The 4080 needed to be that fast because of the 7900XTX. With AMD exiting the high end and nowhere close to 4090, Nvidia has no incentive to make the 5080 look good. If they wanted to, they could make it 5% slower than 4090 while 5090 sees a 50-60% boost and it would still sell.

They could pretty much almost do what they want yeah. Poor competition and wanting to sell chips to AI means they can price high and sell less volume but still keep profits high.

£750 incoming! Yes please

In your dreaaaaams

I think the 4090 might not drop below 1k depending on how much better the 5090 is or if there's any card lower down the stack that can perform similarly for much less money. The only reason the 3090 sold for so little in the used market was because it performed around 10% faster than a 3080.

I reckon the 4090 will sit around the 1k mark, maybe a tad more due to more vram and the 5080 will perform similarly to it.

This is Ngreedia we're talking about not Bargainvidia

Edit: Also never use the used prices on this forum in the MM section, everything usually goes for a lot cheaper!

Nvidia can make the 5090 15-20% faster than a 4090 and price is close to £2k, and a 5080 within 5% of the 4090 and price it around 4080S pricing and people will still gobble them up.
I doubt £1600+ 4090 owners are going to spend another £2000 on 15-20% sure there maybe a few like those who went from a 3090 to 3090ti but the main reason the 4090 has been so popular is because of the huge performance uplift over the 3090 that it offered

You guys expect the 5080 to be slower than the 4090? Man, the 4080 beat the 3080ti, 3090, and 3090ti and had headroom for another couple tiers too. Like it beats the 3090ti by like 30%.

I know the X060ti series went from jumping like 3 tiers (3060ti jumped 2070, 2070S, 2080, maybe 2080S) to jumping... none lol (4060ti loses to 3070) so there is precedence for this kind of thing, but man, that would be 2 ****** generations in a row. I'm so ignorant to all this stuff. Does the node matter like it does for CPUs? Are they going to a new one? Is it always a new one?

If things hold steady, this will be my first time mainlining an AMD GPU since... whatever I had before my 660ti. Can't even remember.
Since 99.9% of my gameplaying is now iracing/racing sims in VR, and nvidia's toolkit(dlss/frame gen etc) is absolutely irrelevant to me now, and since AMD makes better GPU's, I'm gonna be taking a really, really good look at AMD this generation. Especially since I'm so happy with the 7800X3D. Nvidia is so damn cheap the last few years, they managed to make ram a problem lol. While charging unprecedented exorbitant prices, while holding a near monopoly.

edit: this might be the generation we all sign up to play on giant nvidia ai superclusters or something. With everyone on earth assuming AI is going to be mowing our lawns and doing our taxes and cutting our hair, and with nvidia seeming to have the biggest hold so far, should we be buying nvidia stock?

3000 series was on Samsung node as Nvidia tried to save costs, a mistake they won't repeat again considering how close AMD came to toppling Nvidia's halo product in that generation. 4000 series went through multiple die shrinks compared to that and on top of that AMD was at least competing with 4080.

All of this doesn't apply to 5000 series. It's just a small node upgrade and since AMD is yet to catch up with the 4090, Nvidia has no incentive to make the 5080 faster than 4090. Also considering, the 5090 won't be that much of an upgrade over 4090 as it's largely the same node. Nvidia will want to segment 5090 as much as possible l.

Some in here believe the 5080 will be slower than a 4080 even.

It's only logical. AI yada yada :p

But it should have more vram so it will sell well!
