Bought a car, went to tax it online, the site asks for a 12 digit number from the new keeper's supplement, and has a pic to show you where it's located. Only thing is, the number on my supplement is only 11 digits. What gives?

The 1st time you tax a vehicle you used to HAVE to go to a post office. That not true anymore? You could only re-tax online if YOU had taxed it previously.

With the changes to not requiring the disc you can do it online, over the phone and in the post office. You're meant to do it as soon as you buy a new car, which is why they have a 24/7 automated phone system now ( 0300 123 4321 ). I suspect if the new keeper slip has 11 digits and online asks for 12 then the phone will also ask for 12, best off going into the PO in this instance but normally when buying a car now you shouldn't need to.

There's definitely an option to use the 11 digit new keeper number online, I used it for my bike at the start of the month.

11 Digit is the V5C, 12 is the New Keeper Supplement.

To apply online you'll need either:

  • the 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter (V11)
  • the 11 digit reference number on your log book (V5C)
  • the 12 digit reference number on your New Keeper Supplement (V5C/2) if you've just bought the vehicle

I don't have the V11 reminder, just the registration certificate or new keeper supplement

New keeper (using V5C/2 new keeper supplement document reference number)

Please type the 12 digit reference number from the front of your new keeper supplement (V5C/2)

Your V5C/2 document reference number can be found on the front of your V5C/2 :

^ this. I have the 11 digit number, but it says to only use it if i'm the existing keeper, so don't think i should do that really.
