Is this album meant to sound "bad".

I wanted to enjoy it but the vinyl I have sounds terrible.

Vocals seem muddied into the background with bass severely lacking. Was not able to listen to the whole album.

Looking online seems others have similar comments but am surprised someone can release an album this bad.

It sounds like it does because it is heavily compressed along with being very very badly recorded. Coldplay is one of the most consistent bands for fully embracing the "loudness wars"
They also didn't bother doing a proper digital to analogue re-master for the vinyl version, hence both the cd and vinyl versions sound as bad as each other. Never mind, they got your money though.
The better the playback equipment you use, the worse it sounds as well. If you play it on some crappy in car system, it's just about bearable.

Have returned it.

Putting the money towards Record Store Day on Saturday.
