Introduction

Style over function is what they said, not as nice as <insert other cheaper case here> they said... but I am happy :)

The initial build is nearly done and when it is I'll take some time to clean the case and take some photos.

I decided since it could have easily gone wrong I wanted to share my experience with it..

Why the build?

We're planning on building an extension, I will move from my study to the new larger lounge and my 'old' PC was just too big to be seen.

I had a Cooler Master HAF X Full Tower ATX Case, Asus Sabertooth X99, i7 5820k, 32GB Corsair Vengeance, Gigabyte Windforce 980Ti, Corsair 860 AX PSU - which are in varying degrees of being sold.

The only thing I kept from this PC for the new build were two 500gb SSDs and the AIO liquid cooler.

The Hardware

This is the case I used for the build, aluminum body and tempered glass front.
https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lian-li-pc-o5sx-mini-itx-chassis-black-ca-714-ll.html

and the final specification

  • Asus MAXIMUS VIII IMPACT Socket 1151
  • Intel Core I7-6700K Processor (4 GHz, 8 M Cache, LGA1151)
  • Cooler Master Nepton 240M AIO Liquid CPU Cooler
  • G.SKILL TridentZ Series F4-2800C14D-32GTZ 32GB DDR4 2800 MHz C 14 1.35 V Memory Kit
  • MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GAMING X 8GB GDDR5X Graphics Card
  • Corsair SF Series 600 Watt 80 PLUS Gold
  • SanDisk Ultra II SSD 480 GB Sata III 2.5-inch Internal SSD up to 550 MB/s
  • Crucial SSD ~500 GB

I am waiting stock of the GTX 1080, and will continue to use my 980ti until it's sold - unfortunately this is likely to happen before the GTX 1080 is in stock!

Early Progress

These photos were before cabling, excuse finger prints

Issues

I was concerned with this build, will the graphics card fit, what about the cooler, what about air flow??

Graphics Card
My 980ti is 11inches long, as you can see from the image it fits, there is another ~1 1/2inch space.
The case is reviewed as taking smaller length cards, however this is because of a drive rack which can actually be easily removed to give it the space.

PSU
The Power cable which runs internally through the case is pushed up tight against a rod in the case. Fortunately it is not a show stopper, tight it may be, it fits.

240mm Radiator
I was concerned about space for the 240mm radiator, fortunately as I already had one in my old PC I had nothing to lose by trying it. I found it was actually fortunate the positioning of the PSU cable because it would have been in the way of the fans, I would be concerned about other PSU options with this Cooler Master Nepton 240M.

I did have to remount the radiator later on because of another issue....

RAM Space + CPU Cooler Block
Because of the tubes coming from the CPU cooler block it was tight up against the RAM, I had ordered the G-Skill, which are thicker than the Corsair Vengeance I was using temporarily and they did not fit. I almost sent them back for a refund when I had the idea to mount the cooler upside down..

Fortunately it worked and the cables did not impede the fans. I could have turned the fans round to put the power cables at the back, but when I realised I did not want to take it apart again...

Not Final Images

I have a couple of images of the build on my desk, with the Corsair RAM, I will however do some new ones properly and clean the cables up when I get the GTX 1080.

Overclocking

I easily overclocked the CPU to 4.7ghz just changing the multipliers, it's stable and I haven't tried going higher yet...

Final Photo

I have cancelled my GTX 1080 order, I will keep the 980ti for a while longer, I only bought it in december 2015 and it does a fine job.

maybe I should get some LEDS, as when it's dark all I can see is an upside down Cooler Master logo..

I was thinking about just selling it on :)

The unit is £23 + local P&P, and you could just sell it on again..

Haven't got it yet though :D

Give me a shout when you want to shift it. (like... um... pretty please :))

Anyways, back on topic: there are a few things I would do to clean it up a bit:

  • Flip the SSD around so the ports are on the bottom.
  • Swap the blue power LED with a red one (I think the HDD is red IIRC, just connect that one to the Power LED on motherboard), the stock one is way too bright imho. Or even better don't use it like me.
  • If you don't need a slim optical drive, then remove the bracket, this give you a lot more room for cable management. Maybe if you want the PSU modular cables to stay flat, go through the hole, then bend straight up behind itself, much cleaner cabling imoh.
  • If you go with the above, you will also need a way to fit the optical drive blanking plate, I used the cable clips (fitted with adhesive tape) that come with the case to stick against the back of the plate and inner ridge of the case, its the perfect size.

Perfect cable management may seem petty, but you only have to do it properly once, better get it done before the water cooling comes in. For this case where everything is seen, I say it is well worth the effort.

Thanks, I will have a look into these things - I did buy a bluray drive doh :)

So I'm cooling an overclocked i7-6700k and overclocked Titan XP on a single 240 rad.. temps and noise are fine!

Looking at it again I have 1 tiny criticism: CPU to GPU tube.

Since the EK GPU blocks have no determined in and out, you can use the ports any way you want. Couldn't you switch the GPU tubes around so the CPU to GPU tube is totally vertical? Feels a little untidy to have CPU and GPU ports align perfectly yet not make use of it.

But as I said, personal preference and a tiny criticism. Awesome work.

Cheers, yes quite - I did the left GPU tube first because I thought it would be least likely to kink on the way to the pump...probably would be fine with the other.

:D thanks
