Mk5 Golf Coil Springs

Hi all,

Coil spring has broken on near side front of my Mk5 Golf.

Looking to replace both. Been quoted by my usually reliable garage for 2 hours labour per side inc 4 wheel alignment. From my reading online seems a bit steep.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

That's crazy..I'd say it was a 2hr job for any decent mechanic and that's including time for alignment.

I had the two rears on my Z4 done the other month. The instruction quoted 45mins per side plus 15 mins to start and finish the work. So 1:45 in total.

I'd say the Golf will be similar.

Would hinge on what they were calling 4 wheel alignment for me.

A proper alignment will be £60+, if that's included things start to look a bit more reasonable.

I'd be very surprised if it took anyone competent, with the right tools more than an hour to change a spring

I believe (and I could be wrong here) that the mk5 and earlier models have a slightly oddball strut top nut/top mount assembly which can be a bit notorious to work on and swap. I'm not a VAG person but know someone well who raced a mk2 Golf and ran a mk3 VR6 on the road. I remember both being difficult to work on with standard legs for him.
It might be they are playing safe and quoting high so as to not suprize you later.

It does sound tall but would it be a good idea to double check with them and query it?

for just springs?
Pretty sure my little bro and his mate did all 4 springs on his corsa within a couple of hours on the drive lol

Corsa leg, random choice image but I'd imagine similar. Quite right, fairly easy I would have thought.

Mk5 Golf strut and top mount assembly. A little more complex.

These images are just to try and illustrate why I do not believe it's as straight forward as some people might wish and that it could take more time than 'average'.

Actually they aren't.

When you try dropping the bottom arm down off the shock body it fouls the chassis before it allows the strut to become free from the hub.
You have to jack the shock up (compress the spring) to get it out.
More of a ball ache than most normal shocks.
