No it's downstairs in the living room so no idea where anything would be in the ceiling to screw into

Ceilings are normally strapped a lot more frequent than walls, usually 400mm centres.

Start at one side of the room and go maybe 300mm and move around with the magnet in a line of about 500mm you should pick up something within that area.

Use a bit of masking tape or a post it not to note where it is and then go 400mm from it in a straight line parallel with the wall. Should find several more screws/nails if they are spaced 400mm apart that is the way your joists are running towards the wall. Check both directions maintaining the same imaginary parallel line from the wall to confirm.

If theres several within that space there then you’ve found they’re running parallel with the wall, take a further 400mm from those points and confirm there is another joist running in line behind.

Hopefully that makes sense. Good luck.

Sounds like a plan, I will buy the tool posted above and use the method you've noted down, hopefully will be a nice simple job that way, thank you for your help
