Supposedly there are a fair number of weekend fixtures sold without time-slots, I'd expect them to end up as the 20:00 or Friday night games, etc.

The package that Amazon bought last time around was included within the broader set of games this time around.

What does the ‘first pick’ to ‘fifth pick’ stuff mean? Does the PL select which are the most desirable games?

The broadcasters get to choose which games they show from each round of fixtures - first pick, second pick etc is just the order in which the broadcasters choose which games to show. For example, Sky own the packages that have all the first picks (Sunday 4.30 and Saturday 5.30) so each weekend Sky will get the pick of the games. Second picks are split between TNT's 12.30 slot and Sky's Sunday 2pm slot - some weekends BT will get the 2nd pick, others Sky will.

I didn't think Amazons "trial" last time around wasn't going to be as profitable because they were one off match days. It would have been interesting to see how much subscriptions increased if they had a regular weekly spot.

Unless one of these streamers get access to all 380 games (which the likes of Apple would want) and until the archaic blackout rule ends, it will be more of the same.

There was a lot of noise this time around about the black out but alas it seems to have gone by the way side so that's now another fair few years without it. It just points people towards pirating.

Gary Lineker was talking about this on his pod the other day, after the FA cup draw. BBC & ITV do the same with that and the Euros too with the exception there that they both get the final. It's something I'd not really thought about before and seems a bit too sensible, too reasonable and even fair!

There wasn't any noise about the blackout ending, in fact the PL made it crystal clear months ago that they supported it. What the PL are doing is phasing out Saturday 3pm's so that it's no longer an issue.

Broadcasters don't particularly want to show multiple matches at the same time and match going fans prefer Saturday 3pm's as opposed to early or late kick-offs, which is why the PL aren't just offering up 380 games in one go. It's been done gradually, with every rights sale seeing more games broadcast, fewer Saturday 3pm's. At the last rights sale they introduced simultaneous broadcasts for 2 rounds of midweek fixtures and at this sale they've introduced simultaneous broadcasts at the weekend. We're not at a point were around 70% of matches are being shown and they'll hardly any Saturday 3pm kick-offs. In 4 years time don't be surprised if all 380 games are sold and the blackout is still in place - they'll just be more simultaneous broadcasts over the weekend.

To be fair that makes a lot of sense, there won't be a problem around the black out if there is no 3pm games.

Unless there are simultaneous games, which broadcasters don’t like as it reduces overall viewer numbers, there will nearly always have to be at least two or three 3pm saturday games.

There will be simultaneous broadcasts every weekend as part of this deal and there is, albeit only 2 rounds of fixtures, now. Its just being introduced gradually

Any weekend where there's no UEFA competition on the week before will have 3-4 3pm Saturday games. The simultaneous games will be the 2pm Sunday games where teams have played away on Wednesday or in the Conference or Europa league.

Based on the number of games being broadcast, there will be on average 3 Saturday 3pm's per weekend. Some weekends there might be as little as one and others there could be 4+.

I was just thinking about times they utlised during the pandemic minus the 1500 and realistically you have the following slots so unless they start using Thursdays or putting a really early game on a Sunday you only have 2 slots. The late ones on Saturday and Sunday are terrible too:

Friday - 2000
Saturday - 1230
Saturday - 1730
Saturday - 2000
Sunday - 1400
Sunday - 1630
Sunday - 1930
Monday - 2000

The traveling fans I feel for they’ll have to get it so it’s ‘local’ games played on early/late Saturday.

Way to late to have a game kicking off on a sunday at 19.30 who can be arsed with that.
