Why do you listen to music?

What exactly did you listen to on repeat? If it's 'I would walk 500 miles' you need to be sectioned now.

As for the original question, I can only repeat what Mohinder has said. I listen to music because I like it, I enjoy listening to it and can often relate to music. It's better than silence.

If I'm at my PC or walking about I tend to have music on pretty much constantly even if I'm not specifically hearing it (watch White Men Can't Jump for an explanation of hearing and listening ;)), I prefer to have some sort of background noise on and every so often a song will catch my attention to divert me from what I was doing. When I'm walking about I prefer being able to tune out the rest of the world, the number of times I've heard a conversation I didn't want to when I don't have some music playing alone makes it worthwhile.

The basic reason I listen to music is because I enjoy it, sure I could dress it up by saying I appreciate the skill involved, I like the emotions it can convey or whatever and all those reasons are true but at the simplest level it is all because I like to listen to or hear it.

I think when I listen to music my subconcious (SP?) thinks about the first time I heard the song (or a similar song) and most memories are good :)

Actually, I'll give a bit of an explanation. I couldn't be bothered just then, but after reading other posts I'll put my bit in.

First of all, I'm fascinated with the way people actually make the sounds. Electronic music in particular. I haven't a clue where to start when it comes to this, so in a way I appreciate it more. The quality of electronic music sounds much purer in a way, as it's wholly synthetic.

I appreciate the amount of hard work and dedication required to make music. Learning the theory, learning to read music, learning to write it, learning the timing, learning the standards, the physical technicality of playing an instrument. All of that.

The fact that the human body is capable of learning new things and can be put to good use, allowing others to feel enjoyment through it. I appreciate the fact that we
better ourselves by spending countless hours practising and studying.

I like the fact that some people can make music, some people can't. The fact that it's genetic.

I like the fact that you can spend thousands of pounds on speakers that can make your whole body shake with bass. Music sounds better loud!

What else do I like? I like the fact that music comes in so many different shapes and sizes. Drum n bass through to classical. Grindcore through to nasty pop. There's music to make you cry, music to make you feel relaxed, music to make you want to go out and bottle someone, and music to sing karaoke to.

All my mates are heavily into music, I play a lot of guitar, and I couldn't ever not listen to music. Going to gigs and festivals is just so much fun I can't understand why people wouldn't ever try it, but everyone's different. People are bookworms, and I'm not. Horses for courses and all that...

Sorry to waffle but that's kinda the jist of why I like music. :p

I listen to music because of the inner peace it gives me, or because it's one of the few things that I can do that actually makes me emotional. For me, I think above all else, it's therapy.

I grew up playing music, went to music school, and trained to be a professional musician. I was pressured into it from an early age (I passed grade 8 piano and violin at the age of 6 and 7, respectively, for example), practising for hours at a time when really, I should have been outside playing with other people my age, as any child should. Music was literally my life. I was never, however, given the chance to decide whether or not I actually liked music, that was just what I did. Living and breathing music until I was 14, when a wrist injury ended any hope of my ever becoming a professional. I moved to an ordinary school, becoming an ordinary kid.

When I listen to music, I have this annoying voice in the back of my head that spots flaws in the technical abilities of the musician playing it. I see notes. I used to "read" music in my sleep, but now it hurts to listen to Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, Mozart etc because I know what I could have been. I think it's a weird kind of self-abuse; I love this music, but it hurts to listen to it. I think I listen to it in the hope that one day I'll be able to remember playing it, and have good memories about it, rather then just hurting because I no longer can play it. That's my therapy right there; it's just taking a long time.

Listen to Tchaikovsky's piano concerto no.1, or Rachmaninov's prelude in c sharp minor and tell me you can't feel an emotional connection.

I can't stand being on the computer without music...just feels wrong... no idea why.

I like music that moves me in some emotional way for the same reason I love film, art and writing that does the same. Some music is just incredibly clever and I just love to work out how it was put together.

I think the more you listen to music the more your ear for it develops. It's like being a wine expert, the more wine you drink the more flavours and subtle differences you begin to notice.

Music soothes the savage beast (such as a lion (anrgy or frustrated), dragon [not a real {living or dead} animal / beast] or hyena).

It also accentuates (increases or concentrates if you will) the current mood / feeling / situation.

I always have to listen to music at the pc. I just cant focus. I normal listen to M people or The Eagles if im in a calm mood, very nice artist with good songs.

Hey good post I too have started to wonder why, I was once like you, used to listen to it quite a bit but now it just seems boring, I have an MP3 player but most of the time it is being used to listen to podcasts while I'm on the bus or in the gym. I also can't stand the quality of popular radio(Radio 1 etc) so don't listen to it at all, I'll occasionally listen to Radio 4/5 though late at night. My listening habits aside I don't really like the concept of music cos too many people rely on it to dictate how they behave in certain aspects of their life which isn't a good thing imo, so it's become some kind of brainwashing tool which is never a good thing.
