Backup method for mac

Recommending EMC Retrospect once you get past the fiddly UI. Bit of effort put into the initial setup and it pretty much runs itself. Very flexible app.

Indeed, not a bad app came with a drive I bought for my Dad's iMac. Simple enough for even him to use.

Make 2 iTunes libraries, then simply hold down Apple when you open iTunes.

This will let you choose which library to open.. one is effectively ignored whilst using the other :)
 
I like SuperDuper. Nice straightforward app.

The only problem I had was it crapping out when trying to copy a file > 4GiB to a FAT32 drive.

FAT32 doesnt support 2GB files, its not SuperDuper's fault its the file systems inability to support files larger than 2GB.

Also a question, why GiB? its GB surley?
 
Yes.. the whole binary vs decimal, 1024^3 bytes vs 1000^3 bytes mess. The reason why a HDD's reported capacity in the OS is generally different from the GB number it is sold under. FAT32 can house up to 4GiB files for a similar reason that 32-bit computers can address up to 4GiB of memory, right?

For SuperDuper I meant that it just failed silently. The program stalled half way through the backup without any error or advisory message. Took me a while to figure out why! :eek:

would have been funny if you'd looked over to see a giant FAIL on screen! :D

First time I've heard of SuperDuper failing like that though.. did you report the bug to the dev team?
 
As my backup is bootable it is the same format as the mac itself, HSF+. I use MediaFour's program to read it transparently on the PC. Though I could use MacFUSE to read NTFS on the Mac... the Mac is more important to back up.

I think it's a known issue. Perhaps programs aren't privy to what type of filesystem they're writing to?

Thanks for that (and the SuperDuper recommendation earlier unknowndomain).
Ended up going for SyncOTunes which works pretty well. :)

Just had a play, very nice idea although command line isnt very nice :( I would say it needs a GUI but there is one, its just not very feature rich.
 
Chronosync for file replication to my NAS. MY backup is then always up to date. I don't backup the OS or apps, I would just reinstall them.
