If you go above 80mph you get an automatic court summons! You usually get 6 points on your license and if you are going above 90mph they can send you to JAIL.

My flatmate is a bit screwed having got done for 83mph on a MASSIVE WIDE OPEN EMPTY AMERICAN HIGHWAY .... (s/l 65)

I wonder what would happen if a brit were to get done over there? If they tried to send me to jail for going above 90mph I'd actually think it was a wind-up.

I don't understand american speed limits.

They have roads that can go straight for miles, yet they can't go faster than 65mph. Although it seems some states do go up to 80mph.

We can handle cars doing 80 - 100mph on our bendy motorways so whats holding them back.

I disagree, SOME people can drive competantly at those speeds whereas many people only THINK they can.
Much as I speed (and have the points to prove it) I don't agree that the 70mph limit should be raised. To many people aren't safe at 30mph, let alone 80+

I would be in favour of a motorway driving test to be honest, i do pretty mega mileage and as such i would consider myself a very competant motorway driver - some of the stuff you see is absolutely shocking outside of business hours.

The trends are very noticable, during the day its all reps and HGV's, motorways flow beautifully and there is never any braking or slowing down for anyone, traffic speeds are between 80-100mph in the outside lanes at all times. As soon as we go out of office hours its a nightmare :(

I've noticed that too. The roads in general seem to turn into a sea of poor drivers outside of office hours.

Yeah damn minions using your road

;)

I got caught speeding in South Carolina in February, think speed limit was 70, i was doing 92.

I had to pay a $175 fine there and then :(

My uk license seemed to confuse the highway patrol dude, took him ages to fill in the forms.

Glad it was just a fine though really, would have been a bit hard to get back for court or whatever, i was flying home from new york the next day!

I don't think you would have to return to the US for a court date, as you are a UK citizen. If you did something so bad, that a court date was needed, they would have kept you there.

you would just get a fine, the police probably wouldn't even give you a court summons. They can't give you points. Slap you with a large fine and be on your way.

Are you joking? This is absolutely not the case. There are a plethora of morons infesting the outside lane in 3/5 Series BMW's, Mondeos, Passats, A4 2.0 TDI's and diesel Mercs all slamming their brakes on becuase they are 3 inches from the car in front all day every day. I usually end up travelling during office hours and its clear that most people think getting to the next meeting with the sales director is the most important thing in the world.

I agree with fox. Do you live in another country. You sure don't use the same motorways as me.
HGV's over taking cause a mile tail back, which as soon as you get past it's free flowing.

BMW/merc drivers, driving 3 inches of each others bumpers, constantly having to brake. Then the sale rep/boy racers, undertaking to push in front of you, as you left a 1.5second gap. day time driving is a nightmare.

In comparison to what its like after office hours, its bliss, the M4 gets rather busy as does the M25 heathrow area and M42 M40-M6 area. Other than that i love daytime driving.

That's just sheer number, made worse by idiotic drivers. Most of them who drive for a living at that.
