It's called sitting shiva. Clothes aren't ripped when they hear the news, one outer garment is ripped at the funeral. While not bathing, parts of the body can be washed, but not with hot water. Also commonly mirrors are covered in the house. This is only done by first degree relatives of the deceased.Someone is having you on!
They do have some strange methods though. They rip whatever clothes they are wearing when they find out the news and then wear that item of clothing for 7 days. For a week after they also can't work, change their clothes, have sex, bathe or wear any cosmetics (including soap/deoderant/aftershave). Other random strange things like that...
