Members Market

But you need a bank acount for paypal do you not or a credit card? Which a bank would have details on record.

But a bank won't disclose details unless it's literally a life or death situation and that would only be to the proper authorities.

I haven't used it for some time for various reasons, but mainly because I reached my 'sweet spot' on the technology curve three or four years ago when I bought a Barton 2500+ and NF7-S combination...it does everything I need it to, and fast enough for my liking. I bought a second-hand 9700 Pro a good while ago, and that easily handles the few games I play which are mostly turn-based strategy.

Anyway, it's interesting to hear that it is changing, so I'll be taking my former personal policy and upping it quite a notch next time I deal...For the sake of being confident, I'll only deal with people I have dealt with before, or those who are both: 1. users I am quite familiar with from their posting, and 2. users with high trust ratings gained over a number of years.

there's a members market?

I don't see one???

This where azza gets his cheap parts from? (then sells them to me ¬_¬)

I got banned from the MM a long long time ago so :p

Now I know why you where asking me to try and sell your stuff, you carnt see the MM. :p

I feel members should hand in their full address. A mod can then post them sort of letter with a verification code - once the code has been exchanged and verified, that member can then use the MM.

But, in practice, it would take a LOT of effort to do that - and cost a small packet, initially. :(

Excellent idea, but make the member pay for it? maybe by sending a mod an SAE?

But then the mods would have to give out their addresses to complete strangers! Aside from the general feeling of unease that would give to any sane person, they would face additional risk of there being negative consequences...i.e. some berk who gets all het up over being told off or banned might send hatemail or even pay them a visit.

Ive never been stung in MM yet - touch wood and i do tend to sell all my used stuff in there.

Ive no problems giving my details out and prefer bank deposit/transfer. Pickup is even better as people get to see what they are buying.

And i wouldnt have a problem buying off a low feedback user if they were prepared to send the item first which a lot of people wont do.

Its a shame that Members Market has been going down hill a bit.

Though i do sometimes think some people are just so quick to try and get someone into trouble.

Like for instance when i was selling a few bits, the buyer paid me via Bank Transfer (all credit to him since it was super quick) then i had got caught up in life a bit and hadent posted the items and hadent had the chance to email him saying what had happened.

Then as soon as i knew it and had the chance to clear everything up i saw he had posted a couple of replies in the thread that i had started saying stuff like, has anyone recived anything from this guy yet blah blah blah. In a matter of a couple of days.

Give me a chance for god sake.

The fee would cover OcUK's cost to verify the addresses :p The idea of the fee isn't to deter anyone, its to cover costs for the sake of a safer system

The only way to verify the address 100% is to do two things a) go round there b) see a utility bill while they are there

Otherwise via photoshop and royalmail redirect and a few other things it would be easy to get around

I've only just got 250 posts and I'm interested in selling some stuff, but I'd be more than willing to give out my address, telephone number or anything really. If you even search my name on google im sure you'd get my address in a few clicks.

A small fee would be a good idea.

A unique code (e.g #5676) could be sent out from someone to a person's address (via post) once they are eligible for the MM and they can then relay the code back to the moderators/admin when they have received it. Thus confirming their address.

Possibly add telephone numbers into the equation too. It's not bulletproof by any means but it's more of a complication for any potential scammer. Then of course there's the moderation and time + effort it would take to keep it all maintained and ship-shape.

I would also like the members market to require more posts and registration time. 3 months and 250 posts isn't really a deterrent for someone who's going to make a quick and heavy buck, especially if they're selling Quads and 8800's.

Just suggestions. It's easy for us to sit here and pick holes in a system that has for the most part served a very good purpose (have bought and sold a good few things on here, ranging in cost) - even though I do sympathize with those who have been done by people who abuse the system.

Even with any new safer and secure system, it's still going to be used by 'humans' and unfortunately there are some out there who exist solely to be expletives.

I only have two points:

1. Home phone number means nothing really as you can lie about your address with the right phone number or be at a mates / work / etc. I only have a mobile phone because I don't want to pay £115 to BT but I haven't ripped anyone off.

2. The only way I can see of making it better is the money going to an intermediary (but this brings in its own problems). I.e. someone buys something the pay OCUK and then once its received, tested, etc. OCUK forwards the money to the seller. If they don't hear anything from the buyer after x amounts of days its forwarded.

I can't think of any real system that is viable though.

I only deal with people with a high trust and zero negatives.

I know someone who has a relatively high trust with no negatives who has knowingly sold broken stuff on mm and other places, so just having a high trust doesn't mean they have morals.

If he has refunded them then he won't get bad trust.

I have sold one item that has been damaged on delivery and refunded the person however I tested it here and it was okay, when it got to the person it was broken.

Knowingly selling broken stuff is just stupid.

I'm pretty sure he has never refunded anything. The two items I can think of offhand weren't fully broken, but parts were damaged and they only worked sometimes. I think he claimed they had been damaged in the post or something.

If sold and bought a fair bit, but have realised that I rarely bought anything for more than £30 from any one seller.

I've had an item go vanish in the post, so refunded the buyer, called Royal Mail, and managed to get it found and returned to me, hahah

Viva la MM!
