Afternoon Team,

Please refrain from eating at your desk for the next month. As this is the holy month of Ramadan many of our employees are carrying out a Holy Fast. So can I please make it clear to all on the service desk to take your snacks, breakfast, lunch to the rest area.

Thanks
Is this right? I mean, I *like* eating while surfing the net at lunch.

I don't like the idea of other people's religion deciding what I can or can't do while I'm on my lunchbreak. In my opinion, I believe that if they want to practice a religion that imposes on other people, they should be prepared to accept that not everyone wants to compromise, as I don't think it is fair

Nevertheless I will still co-operate on this cos I'd probably be told off by my boss otherwise, as these kind of things are very delicate when it comes to a corporate environment, so everyone is going to be on the "PC" side of things as far as possible. :(

do it anyway, why should you suffer because of what someone else, who you may not even know, practices.

when i was in school i had a few friends who practiced it, and they never had a problem with people eating in front of them. it's just the PC brigade being over protective as per ususal

it's stupid, it's there choice to fast. they will see people eating in the streets etc.
Yet another policy made up by a middle aged white person. Who haven't even consulted the minority party.

I would kick up a fuss. It's some PC idiot forcing their beliefs on others without (probably) even consulting the fasters.

Eat at your desk you big jessy, sure they can sack you for eating at your desk if against company policy, but they can't just change it at Ramadam and then change it back and still fire you ;) :p

that really sucks! I guess you don't really have a choice because they could just revoke eating privileges at desks, but yeah. that sucks.

we have people fasting at the moment, but we're lucky enough not to work for a company of idiots.

to be honest, if they tried to do that here, the people actually fasting would probably complain too!

Your bosses are idiots, whoever thought this one up needs shooting, everyone who didn't stop the idiot needs a good thrashing.

Show your boss this thread.

Also tell him not drive past you in his BMW whilst you wait at the bus stop, it's highly offensive.

Claim that your own religion is entering its holy time of Nadamar where its followers must feast at their desks!

If you don't stand up for yourself, it'll be something else next time...and being you caved in previously they'll expect you to do the same.

Well the thing is it wasn't my boss directly, but my desk lead who asked it, I think my bosses just want to stay out of it tbh. I just don't understand why we have to make special rules for one religion and not for another. :o

I don't want to kick up a fuss though, just because I don't want to be seen as some kind of race-hater by my colleagues in the psychological sense, which I know will happen, regardless of what kind of logic I bring into it.

I think this is a perfect example of our society bending over backwards for certain religious groups. It is not fair but unfortunately is already widely accepted by most people

How do you know it was "their" idea and not your boss who came up with it? Someone fasting shouldn't make anyone elses life difficult - that goes against the whole fasting thing.

No. This is an example of some do-gooder coming up with a stupid idea and those that have an issue with it just rolling over and moaning on the internet. If you don't like it, challenge it.

There isn't a lot we disagree on !!!

The irony of having someone elses beliefs ramadan'ed down your throat.

Oh better not upset the Muslims.

Obviously there are people who will be following Ramadan nearby, why dont you ask them if they mind you eating at your desk.. if they say no then you can eat at your desk happy in the knowledge that you asked first.. if they say yes then you can eat at your desk happy in the knowledge that you asked first.

Tell them there is plenty of countries where they will find it easy to practice their beliefs, for example Sudan, Somalia and Zimbabwe. Here we have food to keep us going throughout the day to make us productive
