Ramadan - We've been asked not to eat at our desks...

I thought the whole idea was to test their faith by resisting temptation?? You should be encouraged to eat at your desk to give a more fulfilling Ramadan.

I used to work at an Asian IT shop part time back when I was in college, at Ramadan no one minded me feasting away on my lunch, infact they used to say it was great, because it made them appreciate breaking fast at night even more..

It reads to me like a polite and simple request and not something you have to do. Not really an infringement of your human rights though is it or really going to cause any real upheavle.

It basically comes down to whether you want to be polite and do someone else a favour or not.

Tell your boss your a diabetic, as people know diabetics have to eat at a regular time each day.

It hasn't got anything to do with being polite. It's about disregarding a stupid policy, so it doesn't become contractual. I bet none of the muslims even mind if you eat at your desk. It's just some pc brigade management making awful decisions. Once you start letting things like this stand, where does it end?
apathy should be banned.

it's like when queers were given the right to be 'married' in the registry offices, and some took down all the pictures of straights people signing because 'it will offend queer people' but when asked they said they didn't really mind

i hate our country

I would be highly offended if I received that email. **** 'em.

This is the United Kingdom, love it or leave it. In fact, why not organise a protest by getting everyone in the office to order great big portions of fish and chips with lots of bottles of dandelion and burdock to consume at their desks.

As atif says, this has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with overzealous PC idiots. For maximum embarrassment for said idiots, I suggest anonymously tipping off a newspaper - the Sun or the Mail would prolly be your best bet. The people have a right to know!

In my opinion, I believe that if they want to practice a religion that imposes on other people, they should be prepared to accept that not everyone wants to compromise, as I don't think it is fair

Have you actually bothered to approach the person that sent out the e-mail and put your views forward, or is this thread really just a rant where you're actually not going to do anything about it?

Great idea.

I think the request is purely because... if they're fasting they're no doubt hungry and eating at your desk when they cannot is probably just going to make it worse for them. I suppose as it's their problem, they could go out during lunch when people maybe eating at their desks.

But, in my new religion that I have just made up, it is my obligation to have a breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, brunch, lunch, afternoon break, tea, diner and supper. Plus during month's with a vowel in their name I have to have at least two random snacks throughut the day in addition to the above holy meals. It will be impossible for me to fulfill my religious duties without eating at my desk. :D
