Vulcan to the Sky update - Norwich, 24th Feb

Thanks for the updates - hope nothing happens next week (as in test flights) as I'm away, of course knowing my luck!

I certainly wouldn't bet on the flights next week. They haven't run the engines at this point... yet...

They always knew it would come together quickly once ethey got the bits in.

Something happen then?
First engine runs. There's a blow by blow commentary on the TVOC forum. It's a complete hoot, a bunch of guys commenting on what they're all watching on the webcams, kinda reminds me of one of the GP threads on here ;)

That was a while ago. ;)

Yup. Some lovely noise. :D

The teeth on the dome was a little silly, but suited her though.

Well.....

They towed her outa the hanger yesterday and over to the test pan where they can run her up safely.

All 4 20201's were dry started yesterday - in other words - turned over without fuel, using the air start system to ensure lubricant was getting to the right places and everything was moving properly.

However, end of the day - they fired up No3. This engine has been in storage and not run for over....

20 YEARS!

The engine is officially older than many people I know supporting the return to flight! :D

Today on the other hand, they started early. All 4 and the AARP have been started and have been run in pairs I believe.

Let the howling commence!

And what kind up update like this would it be without...

A video...

Thought it'd be worth me doing another update.

3 of the 4 engines have been fully set up, however at least one has had to be dropped out of the aircraft again due to a hydraulic line bursting. That will have to be replaced and then the hydraulics will need to be re-bled and tested. The line that burst was one of the originals - this will be replaced from a new from spares.

Bit of a delay, but she had been out recently with the chute packed. Yet to know if she moved under her own power and popped the chute.

Taxiing isn't a large part of the test routine though.

However, she has been totally defuelled and weighed. The CoG has been established and has had extra balast added to bering it into the correct range. Red Slab was beefed up to bring the CoG forward.

Lots of flying controls setup still to be done. It's not the easiest thing to do.

But, as I will have 24 hours notice of the first flight I am hoping to be able to get there to see her go overhead. ;)

The first flight will be announced to the press before hand and they will be there for it, however it will not be going out live in case of problems.

Believe it or not, once the hydrauylic line is repaired, they are still going through the paperwork for all the work that has been carried out. Ass the CAA have been involved all the way along, there shouldn't be much of a hold up there.

Gettign the aircrew together is also proving to be a sticking point, many of them have gone on holiday. :D

Still, the official answer on flight is still: "When she's ready."

The number of engineers has been dramatically reduced, but as the rectification work has been completed thats not a issue. It's almost down to the crew that will maintain her over the next few years.

Still a few electical faults that have been isolated and need rectification. But, nothing too bad.

However, aircrew will be at the hanger on Monday. ;) Sadly, the hydraulics will not be completed until late PM anyway. Familiarisation possibilty?

Anyway - video time

Flying control testing

High power run

And the best - No4 engine going to max.. Howl bitch!

Would I be correct? :p
