PCSOs leave boy to drown

Would you not even consider risking your life to save two children who were drowning? I would, it's basic humanity.

I would becuase i can swim, no question about it.

But if someone cant swim and they see a kid drowning and their 15 or so feet away, tell me how is this person post to get to them?

Awful thing to happen but seriously what sort of training do they need to pull someone out of a pond who is drowning??. FFS i cant swim very well but if i saw someone drowning id be in there like a flash and try and help them.

Just another lame and silly excuse imo. As for plaguing their thoughts for the rest of their lives??....so it should...spineless wimps. I have no sympathy for the PCSO's tbh.
Shoe is on the other foot if they jumped in and something else happened, seriouslt the crap that officers get into for doing things they're not trained in... The parents would have probably sued them...

People also don't seem to realise just how dangerous jumping into a Canal is either.

It's a terrible tragedy, but until more facts are known, its just hearsay and good old media bashing.

I think the failing here iif any is of the two people as people and not PCSO's

Just because you put a uniform on doesn't transform you into a superhero.

Quoted for the truth! It's not to say other PCSOs wouldnt have jumped in, as had been said if they couldn't swim then the situation could have been made a lot worse, and we could have had the death of a young boy and what would have been hailed as 'heroes' going beyond what their duty told them to. Don't deny you wouldn't call them heroes had they also drowned.

Imagine .. you become a "special constable" (so tempting to spell that incorrectly) realising that you might be put in emergency situations but either a) You can't swim and realise that you'd be no use in a situation that requires you to be able to or b) You're a useless inept coward.

The police force shouldn't HAVE to teach a grown adult how to swim, what a stupid premise.

The story doesn't tell the whole truth

Jordon Lyon disappeared under the murky black water of John Pit in Standish Lower Ground as he struggled to keep eight-year-old stepsister Bethany's head above water.

Moments earlier the children had been happily playing and hunting for tadpoles at the water's edge.

At an inquest into Jordon's death, deputy coroner Alan Walsh said it was the most tragic case he had ever dealt with.
The Bolton hearing was told two fishermen waded into the water and helped pull Bethany to safety, but could not reach Jordon.

The three found the boy, by then unconscious, and got him to the side. Sgt Lippitt began trying to resuscitate him.
The inquest heard Jordon was underwater between 10 and 30 minutes. An air ambulance arrived and paramedics continued trying to resuscitate him

Now if the fishermen who where on the scene before the PCSO and they couldn't reach him and no doubt see him as he went under the water.

TripleT you ever swam in the quarry in Appley Bridge, some of the rumors I have heard about whats in the quarry :O

To me it reads like the PCSO's arrived AFTER the boy had disappeared from sight.

Anglers managed to pull Bethany out but Jordon was out of sight before they could get to him.

The alarm was raised and the PCSOs arrived on the scene. Police said they could see no sign of Jordon in the water, so they radioed trained officers for help.

It sounds like the anglers were there first and did all they could to save both children.

They saved the girl and couldn't find the boy. They then raised the alarm.

Sounds to me like it would have been too late by the time the PCSO's arrived.

Tragic accident :(

/edit - beaten by cheets :p

I was just about to quote something very similar.

So the boy was out of sight and then the PCSO's arrived, hardly "Leave him to drown" is it.

Just saw this on the news and I'm disgusted they let the 10 year old jump in to save his sister and neither of them bothered to. It said they weren't trained to do that so didn't. If I saw a kid drowning, training or not, I'd bloody well jump in and save them.

Those poor parents :( They were on the news saying why didn't they jump in or why didn't one go in and the other stay with the 10 year old to make sure he was alright.

Indeed, it sounds like they could have done nothing anyways. I wouldn't have gone in, obviously i'm selfish.

PCSOs are not Special Constables.

Maybe they coulden't swim like said before.

This isn't what happened and that is a point that you and other people may not have picked upon.

No offence intended to you of course.

Sorry I'm going by what the mother said on the tv a few minutes ago and not what I read online. The words came out of her mouth.

I can't swim very well but I'd give it a good try. I can barely swim a width of a swimming pool without getting tired.

Not a lot of people can probally swim the lenth of a swimming pool without getting tired but you can swim.

Water is one of the worst situations to be when your panicking. If you cant swim full stop, your imdeiatly frightend of the water and if the children were 15 feet or so away from the bank, theirs just no way you will be able to reach them let alone bring them back to safety.

I assume one of them could swim but it's no point talking about maybe they could or couldn't until it's stated they can't swim. I think if they couldn't swim that would be one of the first things mentioned in the report.
