Budget card

yep but obviously restricted to AGP

Ahhh, me and my quick answers :(.

Well I think both cards will get held back by the 2400 so the better card is the better option for long term. Short term then I'd save my money and upgrade my whole system.

I remember years ago when I had my 9800Pro in my 2400XP system and it scored about 11,000 in 3dmark2001. When I moved up to the 3700+ skt939 and decent DDR I got my 9800Pro to about 21,000. So I even think his current card is probably being bottlenecked ever so slightly by that CPU (might).

yeah not sure bout him really. wants to do it cheap but obviously also something worthwhile. I like to think he could upgrade whole system but unsure. Guess if he did upgrade CPU later, could try and get a AGP/PCI board or just buy a cheap desktop for now

Hunt the members market for a cheap upgrade and then tell your m8 to start saving the pennies for a graphics solution that's PCI-E. He could get a good system for quite cheap that way I think.

Just wandering what a base unit with DualCore 4400 and onboard 6100 would be like in comparison

4400 is fine but the onboard 6100 is pretty much useless. Just ask him to save up a little ;). Otherwise I think he could be wasting his money doing up the 2400 system.

yep just spoken to him. think he better starting off again. That 4400/6100 could still be bit better than what he has already lol

just found this which looks a reasonable path to get him into PCI-e

Asus M2V (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £43
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ 2.20GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail £49

Looking great already and a massive upgrade to his current system ;). The onboard 6100 might do him for now but I'm sure the Ti4800 is a lot faster although it doesn't have the SM3 support (does it even have SM2 support?). He can make it do until he can afford it anyway. It's a much better upgrade than just the graphics card alone.

Given up building PC's for mates, lost touch a bit and too busy managing 4 offices of desktops and servers in work life..........but guess you can never get away with it.
