e46 saloon im sick of this car now

LOL the Dick Turpin place, thats your problem ;) Awesome pub for grub

You live at at Hampstead heath then?

No if you go to towards the pub up the hill it on the the right side but quite a way down.

They took the gps reciever which was underneath the armrest but left the gps holder/antena which was by the seat and the charger and £5 in coins. They didnt actually get the gps machine.

I'm the first to be a muppet for leaving my phone in the car by mistake but have you thought of taking all your valuables out and leaving the glove box open so that they can see that you have nothing there to take?

Yes I try to remove valuables but sometimes I forget. The first time the got in the car they didnt take anything.

If you like the car and don't want to get rid, you could always get an aftermarket alarm fitted. Even a cheap jobbie with door/boot and bonnet protection.

If you've already been broken into once you really should know better than to leave *anything* in the car, particularly something as nickable as a satnav.

True but it wasnt visable, they still would have got in and left the cigarrette smell which hasnt gone yet. Must have been smoking there a while.

Actually I have gone off the car now, yes it looks amazing with sports bumper but I have had nothing but problems with it.

The whole experience with this car has virtually put me off buying another bmw.

Iginition Coils needing replacing
both tailights wire connectors corroding and the connections falling off
Weird fault whereby the car turns off for a split second while driving - sounds expenive to diagnose and fix
Cd player sometimes cant read discs
Trim around inside door fell off.

Interior quality is rubbish, yes everything fits and works well but it does not feel quality compared to audi, I swear the dials are identical to peugeot

Not to metion the problems with the security

I refuse to believe that a mighty BMW could have issues!!! Are you sure your not delusional? ;)

Sorry dude, you leave Sat-Nav in your car, its sods Law... hope it was insured.

You not got a garage or somewhere you can leave it?

I know where you mean :) I used to live at the top of Holly Hill (the narrow "continuation" of the High Street going up the hill).

Fox, its a particularly nice area of London - people travel there explicitly to rob people or their cars etc. Our Jag and 5 series were both broken into there over the years.

This is the 2nd time its been broken into and its was on the driveway. No forced entry, alarm didnt go off and they took sat nav and put a cigarrette burn in the seat.

They did exactly the same as last time, they must have the scanner and keys. They obviously couldnt get into the boot.

Im so tempted to get rid of it now, its been nothing but trouble

And to all those who wonder where all the sport bumpers on ebay come from, go to hampstead, so many of the 3 series are missing the bumpers, must be really easy to take off too.

Hi There..

Just a quick question. Is your BMW's computer setup so that unlocking the door with the master key disables the alarm? On the E39 it can be programmed to dearm when you unlock it manually, or only dearm when you unlock remotely.

Unfortunatly there are key kits available which can easily open many BMW's manually, and if your car dearms the alarm at this point then the theif will be in and out without any trouble. Of course the car wont start for them, as the key wont have the chip to disable the immobilizer.

I've got mine programmed to set the alarm off if the key's used to unlock the doors, remote unlock is the only way to get in without it going off. If by chance remote doesnt work (say I park right underneath a mobile phone transmitter), then the alarm can still be deactivated (in an emergency) by starting the engine.

Try it out, if you can get into the key without using remote unlock, then a theif will be able to get in without setting off the alarm, as his trial and error key will also disable the alarm :(. But assuming the E46's are like the E39's in this respect, your local BMW dealer should be able to reprogram the alarm to require remote unlock.

I believe the keys are 'reasonably' secure against radio scanning, and the key change their codes frequently.

I thought it was a big 'no no' to even leave a sat-nav mount. Some theives will even break into a car that has the suction ring on the windscreen. Always keep the windscreen clean, and hide all power cords/mounts/phone chargers etc out of sight. If there is anything of interest visible in the car, its going to be broken into so they can search it.

As for the guages.... Dont VDO make the guages for most european cars, BMW just select a guage which they like the appearance of, and has the features they want. Certainly had VDO guages in Vauxhall, VW, BMW, and Mercedes. The build quality on me E34, and now my E39 are both fantastic. Cant fault it at all. (Actually I can fault it.. bloomin pixels :P)

No, I tried unlocking car with key and it sets the alarm off untill the key is in the ignition.

But your forgetting the fact that they left the sat nav mount wich was in the foot well and only took the reciever which was worth around £50. There was no mark on the windscreen and they got in the car at night.

Also noticed they flicked through the service booklet

I now know they targetted a couple of bmw around the area.

Dude what gets me is why you would leave the Sat-Nav stuff in there in the first place, surley if its broken into once you you sorta guess that you maybe targetted again, esp if you leave worth while equipment in there for them to pinch?

Yes im sure it will be targeted again, but its in garage now and will be untill I can get a parking space at uni

Im pretty dam certain im getting rid of it now.

Isnt it easier to park it in the garage at night rather than get rid of the car?

Surely they will just break into whatever you buy next?

Nope the garage is 5 minute walk away.

Its all the problems I have had with this car and plus the built quality is not that great.

It seems bmw are not all they are cracked up to be.

The build quality is among the best you'll find in a car of its type. The only exception is the very early E46's but then what do you expect for a £3k car - it still knocks spots off everything else for the same money.

Well my dads audi a4 is miles apart. The interior feels of much higher quality
than even high end mercedes. C Class was rubbish interior aswell.

Mine is a 53 plate so not early ones

The audi interior seems to be made of higher grade plastics. Example metal door interior handles and on bmw sprayed plastic. The dials actually look decent and you cant even compare the standard sound system to bmw business one.

But then again the audi hold its price much better than 3 series.

I completely agree the sound system is crap.

The A4 does not hold its value much better than a 3 Series at all, though. Infact model for model, the 3 Series has slightly better residuals making the A4 better value for money.
