Smoking in your car could now get you points and fine!!!

More nannying.

Slowly slowly simple little freedoms are chipped away.

Cue to 15 years in the future. No Music, both hands on the wheel unless changing gear, satellite tracking for speed & tax, no makeup or activity even when stationary and on and on.

I do agree there, it depends how they implement it though. If they only charge people who are weaving all over the place,. Then that's good. If they start charging everyone, that's bad and an erosion of are freedoms.

Does this mean they will Sue any car manufacturer that installs a fag lighter as standard ?
Does this mean Cops cannot operate there radios whilst driving ?
Does this mean you cannot Scratch your nuts whilst driving ?

Oppression is felt in my World :(

Either way its a good idea. Really I think that you shouldn't be tarting about with anything whilst you are driving, whether its food, drink , whatever.

Smoking additionally runs the risk of dropping the cigarette into your lap. Now my mates always say it would never happen - yada yada yada. But its a risk.

I dread to think what i'd do if i dropped some hot embers in my lap.

This is getting redicilous!!!

How does smoking a cig cause a distraction?

Its just barmy!

If its a distraction then you might aswell add these to the list:

- Listening to radio/music
- having a window open (as external noise can distract you)
- reading the SAT-NAV
- taking a call via handsfree/blutooth
- talking to a passenger
- changing the radio channel
- messing around with the heating
- reading road signs

Has the world gone mad!!!

Drivers who smoke are not the ones they should be targeting! They should be going after the loonys and the dangerous mofos.

I give up, i honestly do BUT i aint going to be stopping smoking in my car until im dead!

.

a risk is:

anything that has the potential to cause harm

as soon as you take your car off the drive you are a risk regardless if you smoke or not!

Oh Dear :(
I have dropped many a fag into my lap whilst driving. All you do is pick it up with your hand & stick it back in your mouth. No burning, No pile ups, No holes in clothes, Nothing.
Smoking is something i have done for nigh on 30 years whether in a car or not. The only time you adjust your car radio is when you are in the motor. Which do you think is more natural to me ???

Surely the same can be said for mobiles etc? I can drive perfectly fine on my mobile. Sure some people can't, similary how some people can't light a cig without weaving about. So what do they do?

Only reason that mobiles are done as it's an easy target as it can be proved through call logs etc.

As I've just said, YOU might be able to do that but I'm sure that quite a lot of people will panic. Should they start doing smoking tests? If you pass you can smoke and drive? :p

^^ I just see no difference in adjusting your stereo, feeding a CD in or using the Fitted cig lighter to spark one up.
The lighter & the ashtray are within your reach the same as your stereo controls & as i have explained dropping a fag in your lap does not mean instantaneous combustion explosions or crashes.

That's allright then because changing the Cd or radio is also under the new guidelines so yes you could be prosecuted for that as well!!!

Hiya.

Not that I have any great to add to this thread but I think its only fair in my opinion. If Im not allowed to eat or drink whilst driving, others should not be allowed to smoke. I don't think the argument over "We need fags or we go loopy" is fair either, sure smoking might be a sort of drug that your addicted too but hey whats to stop me being addicted from fizzy drinks or food, Im addicted to apple pie but I just have to wait till I get home for some.

At the end of the day, I would not be bothered but its the fact that smokers should get no special treatment. Sure I'm a tad annoyed that I cant do a lot of things in my car, but its only fair that we ALL suffer, not just the non smokers.

Thanks,

Out in the east I used to have to pay for that kind of kinky action.

Yes, and by having a cigarette you are increasing that risk. Can you not wait until the completion of your journey or pull over to have a cigarette? Is that too much to ask?

I don't drink or eat whilst driving. This is because I can wait to have a drink or eat something - both activities that are human needs. Smoking is not.

That may apply to you, but not others, surely you must be able to see the hazard of dropping a cigarette onto your lap whilst driving.

So, you are out driving, wearing your best suit or clothes and you drop your cigarette in your lap - you mean to tell me you wouldn't even flinch? You wouldn't even take your eyes off the road for a second?

I can adjust my car radio without taking my eyes off the road, even so, i have a steering remote.

There is no risk of your car stereo causing panic, or pulling your attention from the road instantaneously.

I agree with you to an extent, I disagree with loading CD's fiddling with audio settings etc whilst in transit.

No need to exaggerate! but to say someone dropping a cig in their lap has never caused an accident is a bit bold, you'd have to agree!

you dont smoke and i do so how am i getting better treatment?
And how are you suffering? Explain that one to me?

Me and you are identical in driving - only difference is i smoke and you dont!
That doesnt mean i get better treatment!

About time, I'm sick of smokers in their cars chucking their fag packets, fag ends etc onto the road and sometimes onto my car!

Smoking whilst driving should just be banned tbh.
