OK i cant list the website, but one of the bigger UK ( well nearly hint) Online retailers have the 40GB PS3 listed as coming soon but with no price. It just mentions that there are 2 USB ports and no BC (more to do with no EE i guess, same as the current UK ones), i guess the rumors are true, and it looks like it will be coming to the UK. The price is rumored to be £299,not sure what else it includes, but £100 more than the US version seems a bit high though (but not uncommon)

I agree with Inoshishi, £250, or even £280 (same as premium was) would have been more appealling.

Now you have a console with only a 40gb as much as a 120gb Xbox360..

Eh...they may as well drop the 60GB price instead of making a 40GB. Who is gonna pay an extra £80 odd quid for 20GB more storage? :/

Edit: Ah right no backwards compat still could have been priced a bit better.

Its listed in BestBuy in the USA now as well only it is $399 with Spider-Man (3?) on Blu-Ray. I think the description about the backwards compatibility is misleading. In the USA they refer to the models without BC as the ones with software emulation (i.e. all PAL units), to differentiate them from the earlier 60gb models that had the Emotion Engine hardware so did hardware BC. How can the new units not have BC it is all done in software?

Also Sony have a big PS3 related announcement due on Oct 12. Just in time for xmas price cuts?

I reckon USA $399 & UK £299 PS3 with 40gb And Spider-Man BR. And also maybe change around the 60gb/80gb model by swapping the things you get with it to make it better value compared to the new 40gb model.

The PS2 runs on two chips - the Emotion Engine and the Graphics Synthesizer. They only took one of those chips away in PAL PS3s. It's the Emotion Engine that's emulated by the Cell CPU. If they remove the Graphics Synthesizer chip in this newer PS3 model also, then backward compatibility will be non-existant.

Mr Nokkon, that's not strictly true - you've still got the Blu-ray drive (and maybe wireless connectivity.)

True but if they priced it the same as a Premium, and it comes with Blu-Ray & Wifi - Then MS will have a fight on their hands, it would make the PS3 a more attractive package overall, especially by Christmas when there are more games out.

I know the place you're on about but I can't see any mention of a new model?

Do a search in PS3 for 40GB, its there, i guess untill next friday no one can say much, theres rumours of PS2 $99 80GB PS3 $499 and PS3 40 GB at $399. Some good prices there, but Ive heard that Sony has let the pricing and bundles be set by region ie just because theres a drop in the EU doesnt mean there'll be one in the US etc .

Edit just saw this doing the rounds (sorry if english isnt good translated from french)
Update: According to our information resulting from the great distribution, the PS3 including a hard disk of 40 Go should be available as of on October 13 for 399 euros (£285). One waits more than the confirmation as well as the details to officialize information."

They confirmed that a PS3 40GB is on the way, just wait for an official confirmation, maybe for the "Big Bang" Conference

In the original US PS3, the Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer are combined into one chip. As also used in the slimline PS2s.

This was removed from the motherboard for the EU release (and now all) models - with software emulation the Cell has to do all the work, with emulating the EE and translating GS to GPX, and handling all other emulated PS2 archetecture.

Sounds like they are just removing backwards compatiblity being installed on the system, doesn't save any cost, but perhaps they will offer the emulated BC as a paid download from PSN to try and make a bit of money off of it, or hope people will go for the standard PS3 because they want the backwards compatibility out the box.

Even @ £299 I still can't see Sony shifting bucketloads of these.
Sure, for people like me who really want to play F1 and RFOM, it'll be a lot closer to a price we are prepared to pay.
But, without a decent catologue of exclusive games, I can't see people rushing out to buy them.
Somoeone said in a post on another forum probably most sensible thing I've heard with regard to the next gen console war.
'Even when the PS3 does finally have a decent list of exclusive games, developers will still be rolling out top games for the Xbox 360 so MS wont suffer fools lightly'.

Thats wrong Euro PS3's and 80gig US models have no EE chip ( cell handles that through software emulation) but the GS chip is still there, BC on these models is split 50/50 between software emulation and the GS chip.

Hashcake remember that although this fact gets shot down by forumites the PS/sony brand has huge power in europe ( 1 million console sales in the first 4 weeks at such a high price speaks volumes ), while 360 has gained some marketshare in the UK, in the rest of europe the 360 is floundering ( sales charts of software and hardware can be found to back this up ).

The real battle for sony with MS is in america where the majority of its total install base to date is based, when this lower spec model is released along with the 60gig version price drop we will see increases in sales for sony in europe definitely.

You mention F1 and resistence almost as the only two games sony have for the machine, but when you think about it PES and Fifa along with your Need for speed and burnout franchises go hand in hand with the PS platform for the majority of the UK and europe mainstream console buying public ( the members of this forum by the very fact that they post on a gaming forum do not represent this demographic ) so with a PS3 console 30 - 50 pounds dearer than the 360 and with the new versions of these games appearing all the Alan wakes and Mass Effects games will mean nothing to these people.

The BC issue has not been clarified so we will be none the wiser about this until an official announcement, but yet again the joe bloggs / chav / uneducated consumer will not care about this feature if it is not there for they will be none the wiser about its availability in the first iteration of this console, all they will know is what the will see when they get it home, it plays nicer looking versions of there favourite, dull ea yearly reiterations and of course the excellent pro evo and burnout and those new HD movie things.

MS are doing really well on their home turf and to a lesser extent in the UK, but they have faced no real pressure yet in this latest console race due to the high price and limited software catalogue of the PS3 ( the wii is not part of this equation due to the fact that nintendo avoided this kind of arms race from the very beginning ), but I do believe that we are starting to see something of a fight back by sony and a lot of those people wanting that new playstation will buy quite a few come this xmas.

As said, you are wrong. They just removed the EE and NOT the GS.

Just to clear it up, here is proof!

US/JPN PS3 showing the EE-GS chip on the left

Euro PS3 showing the GS on the left in its place. Notice the PS2 memory and I/O chip have been removed too.

In the new 40gb version, the GS is missing completely.

I think Sony will be making a huge mistake in the UK if they offer no kind of BC at all - even a complete software emulator would be better than nothing

Im also under the impression that for the kit you are buying £299 just before Xmas would be the right price for a lot of people as long as GT5 Prologue is out on time along with Home and a handful of 3rd party games. (one controller and a BR - Spiderman or Pirates probably - in the package should be good enough)

About time..

A games console priced at a games console price point!.. about flippin time.. this should help move a few units..

It's clear Sony are no where near where their arrogance thought they would be, and now we see a sensible decision, we don't need 2Tb HDD's and Tea Making facilities, just a cheapish console and more importantly some games..

I've been on the verge of flogging my PS3 for some time, the lack of decent games is just ludicrous, I'm fed up of all the broken promises.. I see this is some very good news, this will put the PS3 back into competition with the 360, and that's only a good thing..

Now lets see if MS start putting the HD-DVD drive in as standard..

because they are replacing the 60GB with an 80GB one. so you'd be paying extra for an extra 40GB etc and maybe wireless not sure if the cheap one will have it.

They could sell the 60gb at £199 and i still wouldnt be interested, it just doesnt have the games. Waste of time and resources bringing out this lower spec model.
