-------------------------

Last Christmas I decided that I wanted to shift some bodyfat and start lifting weights. I started off by focusing primarily on losing weight and did so very effectively by not combining carbs and protein in the same meal. By April I had lost one and a half stone, leaving me at a healthy 12 stone 10.

Fast forward to today and I've reverted to a "normal" diet, meaning I'm combining carbs and protein in my meals, I've also changed certain foods for healthier varients, such as whole grain pasta instead of white, wholemeal bread and cut down on saturated fats. My current diet is healthy and free from junk food.

Since reverting to this "normal" diet, I've managed to lose a further 10lbs by doing regular cardio and weights 5 times a week.

My current workout looks like this:
Monday: Chest / Triceps
Tuesday: Back / Biceps
Wednesday: Legs / Cardio
Thursday: Shoulders / Abs
Friday: 4 week rotation (i.e. Week 1: Chest / Triceps, Week 2: Back / Biceps etc.)

I'm happy with the way my training is going and I've noticed good increases in strength, stamina and recovery, however I feel that if I was eating more protein, my gains would be more noticable.

That brings me to the point of the thread.
I'm a vegetarian (no meat, no fish - but eggs and dairy are fine) and I don't think I'm consuming enough protein to compliment my training.

After a workout I have a post workout shake (Boditronics Whey Protein), however I do find it hard to eat "healthy" protein (i.e. not fatty cheese) during the day.

Does anybody have any reccomendations as to what I could eat to increase my protein intake following a vegetarian diet?

Sorry I've not got anything to add but I'm interested in any answers as well because that is the situation I'm in more or less so I hope you don't mind me jumping into the thread. :)

Not at all :)

I'm just preparing a nice protein breakfast - 2 hard boiled eggs, veggie bacon and some wholemeal bread :D

How about some non-fatty cheeses such as quark or cottage? I'm back on the quark and Options now as my pre-bed snack - love the stuff.

I do eat a fair bit of cottage cheese actually, I have it on my baked potato.
Any other suggestions with what to have it with?

Can you have Whey powder as a veggie?

Depends how strict you are and how the whey is produced I suppose, since normal whey is produced using rennet from cows stomachs then probably not but then it is a byproduct of the meat process so perhaps more justifiable since no additional animals are being killed for it - I'm not entirely sure since it wasn't something I'd given much consideration to before. I vaguely think that you can produce the enzymes artificially to break down milk to produce whey but it is more expensive, I'd need to research more to be sure.

Just checked on myprotein and they have a green V so I think it's ok for veggies, they also do a brown rice protein which looks suitable for veggies and vegans and is meant to have 22g protein per 30g so could be an alternative.

P.S I know it's best to get as much protein as you can from solid food, however the above would supplement this :)

Quorn has more protein but less fat than it's meat equivalents I think. I think it was Quorn anyway... I only know 'cos I compared it to a meat burger.

Any fungus is high in protein isn't it? Nuts - but nuts are high in fat. You have lentils, peas, beans and soya too.

Eggs eggs and more eggs oh and whey.

But steak is better :D

Yeah, I do eat a lot of eggs, I'm thinking that boiling three or four each morning and taking them with me in a tupaware could be a good "protein snack" during the day. I'm also considering the protein bars...but I'm not sure if that'll start to get expensive if I'm consuming one or two a day.

Steak sucks, unless it's running around a field having fun ;)

I wish more meat eaters were like you, at least that way the animal would sometimes win :D

M8 ill be honest my biggest pet hate is people who will not acknowledge that their steak/chicken/lamb chop whatever was once a living organism. If you cant deal with the reality of that, nay if you wouldnt kill it yourself, you shouldnt eat it, you have no right to eat meat willy nilly then push it to one side when someone gives it a name or reminds you that it was an animal. Shows total disrespect and is typical of the supermarket culture.

I eat meat, lots of it, but i do so without the slightest pretence or misconception that it magically appears out of nowhere. Although for some reason people always get upset when i refer to eggs as "chicken periods"

lol

i would only eat what i would kill

Yep, those cows are pretty deadly....

They weigh up to and over a ton m8, im a big guy but ill tell you what without weapons the cow would deffo win, if it was a bull id want a very big gun. One kick from an animal that big WILL kill you if it hits something important, plus you could beat a cow over the head all day and it would just go "Moo"
