What is the mutts nuts at the moment? Looking for 1080p, fantastic IQ, deep blacks, Picture in Picture if possible... basically as good as it gets. I've googles reviews but finding it very hard to choose... things aren't as clear-cut as PC hardware. Any suggestions? :)

I just bought the Samsung 37" M87. It covers all your requirements listed there. The blacks aren't as deep as the 40" and above models (it doesn't use the glossy Super Clear Panel) but apart from those it's still as good as it gets when it comes to LCD at the moment. There are firmware issues with the set, so it can be a bugger to buy one without the bugs, but I was able to buy from Cost Co (discount warehouse) so I could pick and choose from the boxes they had.

Sharp and Toshiba do great 37" sets too, but the inputs/compatibility aren't as good as the Samsung (no 1080p through VGA) so I went for that in the end. All of these were shortlisted after careful consideration though, and are the best around at the moment.

Yep go for the 40" samsung LE40M87BDX @ £815 inc del - check out pricerunner.

Has the better panel.

Aye, if you can stretch your budget and you have the space, I'd go up to the 40".

I decided that 37" was the maximum size I could manage in my room, and at the time the 37" was £200 cheaper than the 40" set, so it was a no brainer for me. I'm still happy with it though, and I still think it's the best 37" around. I kinda like the fact the screen isn't reflective too, which would be a problem for me if I went for the larger set.

37" panels are made by Chei mei

by a 40" panel and your guaranteed one made by S-LCD. the plant that sony uses.

the high spec 40" samsungs will be S-PVA as well, 37" panels arent and have inferior viewing angles as a result.

In some places the 40" M87 is cheaper than the 37" M87.

Why a 37" LCD?

Thought about the Panasonic 32" LDX70 / LDX700? I read that they are probably one of the best 32" sets on the market.

I've got the TX32LXD70 telly here and its the best I've owned. With regards to the 37", theres a 37" panasonic lcd coming out very shortly that does 1080p which apparently is the mutts nuts, BUT, they've decided to put the speakers on the sdie instaed of underneath so this makes the tv 103cm wide! I was looking at getting one of these, but its just too wide

Yea, I heard about that new 37" too, spec does look very promising. Did'nt realise about the speakers though, 103cm wide, that is a wide TV. Its around £1000 mark though which is a little out of my £900 tops budget.

There are many 40" Samsungs out there...

See post #4.

Cheers for the reccommendations chaps, I didn't know that the 37" panels were generally inferior... that's good to know.

What about the LG's, Toshibas etc, they any good too? in comparison to the Samsung?

The sony 40W2000 is arguably the best VFM 40inch,1080p LCD panel at present,it's recently undergone a huge price cut and can now be had for well under a grand online,my folks have had one since last year along with sky hi def and to me the HD picture quality looks stunning,it can also look good in SD with some tweaking.

Yea, I see it. I did'nt know if he was mentioning another Samsung.

The 40" M86 / M87 is certainly a great TV. I was waying up one myself but 40" is a little too large for my room, so im settling for the 32" Panasonic LDX70 instead as its arguably the best 32" out there.

37" panels are not so good in some TV's I hear. There is a great Panasonic 37" coming soon though, does 1080p as stated earlier.

If you need more info on which one to get, head over to avforums.com. The forums are huge and you get a lot of good info over there.

Sony / Samsung share the same plant. Its called S-LCD and it produces 32/40/46/ inch sets

LG and Phillips are the same company and share panels

think the only other producer is Sharp

all the other brands (eg Toshiba) use AU Optronics / Chei Mei

Samsung use a mixture of AU / CMO / SLCD depending on the TV

but i think Sony / Samsung are the only ones to use S-PVA panels

I also have the Sammy LE40M87.

....I'm pretty happy with it - The only real bad point is the onboard speakers... The Sound really isn't great.
