Bit-Torrent NAS Drive

Evening all.

Short and sweet. I've just got a 20mbit internet connection and want to make the most of it.

Can't really justify leaving a PC on 24/7 just to download stuff and I'm sure I've seen NAS boxes that can download torrents. But I can't for the life of me find one.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I hear that the Linksys NSLU2 is quite popular but I imagine it's been eclipsed by now by a newer machine. Torrentflux is probably the best torrent client to run on a NAS. It runs with the Apache web server for remote administration via the web. If I were you I'd try to use Debian as my distro since it's lightweight and features an excellent package manager that makes it a breeze to set up over SSH.

Many of the QNap drives have a built in torrent client

no idea how good or bad these are tho.

I have a Freecom FSG-3 WLAN 250GB - the latest firmware includes a built-in torrent client The ASUS WL-700GE is another similar device....works a treat on my FSG

I use a synology DS207 with a 500Meg WD AAKS. Brilliant.

You can install Linux on the 323, which of course can install torrent client, but in the process could brick it. A mate has a Buffalo Linkstation Pro, installed linux. The firmware is stored on the hard drive, so if you make a image of the hard drive prior to fiddling, if you brick it just restore the HD image (take HD out, fit in PC)

I got a Qnap Ts201, its brilliant, the built in client is a bit rubbish though, so _ installed torrentflux on it (theres a guide on their forums for it - forum.qnap.com) but if i were you i'd get the TS209 pro if you can afford it, cuz it runs deiben on it already and has much better support for other applications. To install another stuff on it though you need to update the firmware and its always a risky thing, its recommended you update it all and install everything you want before putting your data on it lol.

iv got a VIA M10000 running FreeBSD, 60gb OS HD, and 1tb datadisk constantly downloading. uses little power, and powerful enof to host a nice TorrentFlux front end to let me monitor my downloads from anywhere.
