Royal Mail Strike Action

One of my mates works for Royal Mail and most people in his office dont even know why they are striking so they are just spending the days off and at home doing whatever they want....

What do you expect them to do? Go on strike and turn up to work? Not everyone can fit in nor wants to attend a picket.

That clearly shows either a lack of understanding of the business your friend works in, or poor communication from the CWU as to why it balloted its members to take industrial action.

How ill informed, I must say. Or bad semantics.

You think that the 'Union' caused the strike?

Yes, because they are acting in a short termist fashion preying on the greed of some of their members for short term gain over a stable future business model.

I think you will find that the strike action was caused by a ballot of members, into which I think its evident that they voted for strike action.

And I'll think you'll find the union gives very little choice in the matter, by choosing striking as a first option and encouraging militancy and outcast status for those who refuse to go along with it (as has been seen in this thread)

I fail to see how the Union caused this. If there were no 'grumbles' there would be no strike, but still a Union in place. Or are you referring to the fact that they (CWU) facilitated the strike?

If you can blame the employer, you can blame the union. At very best it's six of one and half a dozen of the other...

What should those consequences be? Hung, drawn and quartered at dawn perhaps?

Allow the company to sack those who strike. If they are as valuable and as right as the union says, the company wouldn't actually sack them (it wouldn't make business sense) but it would remove the impunity that strikers currently have.

Allow the company to sue the party that encourages employees to breach their contracts for damages would also seem entirely appropriate to me.

None of the above would prevent strike action, it would simply make it not the first choice of militant unions.

Many thanks to CWU for making me out of pocket!

I never had much respect for Trade Unions and now I have none whatsoever. They did do a good joob when kids were in mines but now they are just a joke imho.

Now we aint going to see any mail until Thursday they say?

Strikes dont solve anything - Wish someone would use the Japanese method of sticking them in a room with a neutral party and they are not allowed to leave until everyone is happy.

Atleast that way works!

Wonder if I could send an invoice to the CWU for my loss of earnings as a photographer?

Sure I could use Parcel Courier companies to deliver a letter but thats going to cost £7!

Meh is not impressed!

If you're lucky. There's going to be a massive backlog when they go back to work on Wednesday. Don't expect anything for another week at least after that. If it does get there sooner, bonus.

Why isnt first class parcel here today? Since they are going on strike at noon. It should arrive before 12 but nope it did not. :/

interesting info - i just went to my local RM sorting office and it wasnt open. The gate was open and there was people waiting outside the warehouse doors and a guy came out and he was getting people stuff. I had 2 items to get, one i got but the other he said "i cant find it but we will be open as usual on wednesday" brilliant!
The go on strike and leave a few people to get items for people so the public doesnt get that annoyed. Wasnt the idea of a strike to do this to increase pay or whatever?

I was pretty fuming id payed for a taxi to get there and it wasnt open. If i didnt get either of my items i was about ready to put a window through and go and get it myself. What do people do who have cheques and need to cash them to pay bills and stuff. If that was the case then a anti royal mail riot maybe?

Not all places are on Strike. Our local sorting office here aren't on strike, they told the union to **** off.

TBH unions are a pain in the arse, you take a job at the pay you agree to. Either accept that or leave tbh. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would work for that money.
