4 October 2007 10:16 GMT - Sony will announce tomorrow that has bowed to consumer pressure by not only reducing the price of its 60GB console, but also creating a 40GB version priced at £299 to go up against the Xbox 360 Elite.

Confirmed by multiple sources in the games industry in the UK, Pocket-lint has learnt that Sony Europe will officially drop the price of the games console in the UK by £56 to £369 in an attempt to boost sales ahead of the Christmas rush.

"We are currently under strict NDA, however that NDA runs out in the next 48 hours", a retail source told Pocket-lint.

As part of the deal the newly introduced value pack, which included an extra controller and games, will be phased out, Pocket-lint has been informed by multiple sources within the industry.

"Although we aren't sure when in October it's happening we are aware that the price will drop to £369, with shops probably selling for £349, and a 40GB model launching as well to compete against the Xbox 360", a major games publisher told Pocket-lint.

In attempt to offer an even more compelling alternative to the newly launched Xbox Elite, Sony has also said it will be launching a 40GB "Core" version.

As previously rumoured, the new PS3 console will still feature the Blu-ray drive as standard, come with 40GB hard drive, Wi-Fi connectivity and a SIXAXIS controller, but it will lose two of its four USB slots and the memory card reader.

It will also lose the backwards compatibility chip, although this isn't likely to affect UK customers, as in Europe backwards compatibility is done via software.

The rumours of the new unit, which were broken by Pocket-lint last month, means that if you include the cost of buying the Wi-Fi adapter and HD DVD drive to the Xbox Elite, the move means the new PS3 will be £160 cheaper, although you will get a bigger hard drive with the Xbox.

The price will also make it one of the cheapest Blu-ray players available in the UK.

"Sony is clearly hoping to make a comeback against the Nintendo Wii, which is currently outselling the PS3 four to one", an industry insider told us.

Odd that it would remove 2 of 4 USB and the card-reader. The card reader is a fantastic piece of kit on it and should make updates of something like PES so simple using an SD card.

I wonder if on the new ones it has a flap to nothing or if it's now solid plastic?

Well if it ended up being the cheapest PS3, the lack of card reader and loss of 2 USB ports wouldn't make any difference to me, I would still get one.

Even dropping BC wouldn't be an issue as I would hardly be likely to start playing PS2 games.

I reckon it will be like the now defunct 20GB model (I think in that there was no flap at all where the card readers were omitted).

any updates could just be done via the USB ports using a memory stick. I am certain many more people would have access to a USB memory stick than an SD card. And most cameras will show up as a USB mass storage device so *** card reader loss wouldn't affect the camera connectivity (apart from older digicams that did not have plug and play mass storage device functions over usb).

USB ports and memorycard reader wouldn't bother me, but it seems to me that they probably add next to nothing to the manufacture cost - maybe pennies???? I'd find it far m ore likely that they drop the wifi.

On the otherhand backwards compatibility would be a big loss as PS2 games are the only thing that get played on many PS3's!!!!

Ahh, good thinking. Never even clicked despite mentioning USB in the previous sentence. It's all good then.

Exactly the same for me, don't really care about all that extra fluff or BC.

tbh, I'm quite disappointed that the only difference isn't just a small HDD. It seemed Sony decided that all models would have wifi and card readers etc when they ditched the awfully limited 20gb model. Now they seem to be introducing a limited model again. I kinda liked the idea that all new units around the world where the same with just a different HDD sizes. but it seems (as MS have proven) that 2 models (now 3) sell better than 1 ;)

WAIT! :( ive just bought a ps3 literally 2 days ago. Can i get a refund or something????!!!! but i got one of their bundles (extra controller and 3 games £425)

My PS3 has a backwards compatability chip.
But its a hong kong unit so cant play UK Ps2 games.
Although that isnt an issue as the 2 PS2's in the house do a fine job of that thankyouverymuch.

And i still got it cheaper than the new cheaper price.
£320 for the console and £20 p&P, and got it week after launch as well.

I thought you could change the HDD your self?

If im right well why dont they sell a cheaper one without and then you can choose and buy your own HDD the size you want

Said the £300 price point would tempt me, more for blu-ray at the moment then games. Looks like I shell be spending some money soon.

On the otherhand backwards compatibility would be a big loss as PS2 games are the only thing that get played on many PS3's!!!!

They're only removing the Backwards Compatibility chip that enables BC outside of Europe.

Inside Europe the PS3 uses software emulation (apparently there is a small performance hit, but nothing major) for older games... and the chip itself doesn't get used anyway.

All they're effectively removing is a component in the console that does absolutely nothing over here anyway, so don't worry about it ;)

Nice price for a Blue ray player. i can see the PS2 story happenning again. Lack of games is a problem but i think once its got to a year life span. The big titles will come.

Problem is developers would shy away as out of the box games that require a save store or uncompression using a hdd cant be used (sorry probably a bad desscription)

Yes Sony do allow you to change the hdd - and even tell you in the instructions exactly how to do it

Woah this is actually really good. There isnt much difference at all. No compromise apart from the PS2 compatibility which many wont mind. They should have done this to begin with.

With MGS4 and GT5:P out very early next year i am sure people will bite. There's been a lot of great titles from smaller and new developers so far. Plus Blu Ray for christmas is always nice. Not to mention all the crazy bells and whistles PS3 does(free online, streaming, internet browser).
