Hi all

Just purchased a Q6600, and was wondering what the best after-market air cooler is

Im considering overclocking - ive heard good things about the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - but are there better alternatives? Price not an issue - but dont wish to go down the water cooling route

Any help or advice appreciated

Thanks

if your going to be overclocking your quad you want to be looking at top end air coolers i.e. : scythe ninja/tuniq tower or probably the best option is the Thermalright Ultra Extreme

the reason i haven't bought a Thermalright Ultra Extreme yet is because people say it may not have a flat base.

is the 1c difference between Tuniq Tower and Ultra Extreme worth the gamble and get the Extreme?

dont like the idea of it not having a flat base tbh

so far im leaning towards a Tuniq tower or Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro (still)

I hear the Tuniq tower is big, but is it heavy? I dont want to have to worry about stress cracks appearing around the cpu in a years time.

Akasa AK965 Skt775

Seems to do very well in reviews and is relatively cheap to buy and easy to fit.
It would appear to fair better than the Arctic 7Pro and takes up slightly less space in the case.
Currently running a Q6600 clocked to 3.2Ghz @ the following temps:
Idle 35*C
Load 50-55*C

This is on stock volts with no instability problems whats so ever.
Incidentally, I do have stepping turned on in the Bios so drops CPU to 2.4Ghz and 1.1??V.
Again, this runs stable with no problems.
Fan speeds are set to auto/legacy control which generally runs at approx 900 on idle and up to 2400(2800max) depending on temps.

If it was me it would be a Tuniq or a Thermaltake BigTyp 120 VX, both are within a degree of each other and both are £10 less than the Thermalright Ultra-120

Don't get me wrong the Ultra-120 is a fantastic cooler, but you have to get a decent fan on top of the price of the cooler and then you will most likely have to lap the bloody thing to get it flat, and then it will beat any other air cooler by a couple of degrees.

You are missing a lot if you choose to ignore all reviews.

I would consider both, but also take human nature into account.

Entirely your choice.
