Been told my current Hifi is crap, need advice

And if it's bi-amped, then why only a single cable to the speaker? Should have two runs.

so it can't be...just a marketing term. Only a single amp is driving the left & right, and the sub by a third power amplifier.

Look closely badbob. There's a black wire running alongside each coloured wire.

Unless you meant an additional set of cables to each speaker.

In my defence, I have no experience with bi-amping

As for the poster above, Denon isn't high-end, they're budget gear.

Whilst the Denon systems typically discussed are budget level kit, that's not to say that Denon doesn't produce high end gear.
Go run a google search on the Denon PMA-SA1. From what I can see, that costs a cool £5499, which does strike me as probably being fairly high end. Having never heard it, I'm not going to comment on it's abilities, but chances are that it's not rubbish.

Theres two cables coming from the speaker, the blue one and the red one, each had a + and - cable

ok fair enough, so looks like biamped. However I can guarantee a Rotel/NAD stereo integrated amplifier and decent pair of speakers will blow yours out of the water for sound quality. I had a Midi system for my first audio kit. It sounds horrid.

Ignore power ratings from your system, in reality it's probably more like 10-15W, compared to my 125W per channel into 8 Ohm. If you really think your amp is similar in power to a quality amp with high loads you're been suckered into marketing. Has your amplifier been tested properly, or does it just say 100W @ 10% THD into 6Ohm DIN? Or does it say 100W @ 0.05% THD into 8Ohm RMS, both channels driven?

yeh, sorry if i've been arrogant.

But i just cant believe that those tiny, puny looking denon speakers cost £2000, even though they're technically "crapper" than my £300 system!

Anyway, I guess i'll have to hear hear it to believe it.

Dude you have a stero that looks like the starship F£$£"$£" enterprise. Ie it doesn't F£%£^ fly does it? Even a vahxhall sodding corsa would beat the starship enterpise on account that its a sodding real thing that works.

My point being you've got some toysRus stereo that looks like it belongs in the bedroom of a furiously masturbating spectacled boy in an arsnal vest. Grown ups have component systems that look sleek and subtle, tweeters seperate from subs, speakers that dont look like they have been sent back from the future to kill john connor.

Get a grip of yourself man! People are trying to help!

No need to waste money on that stuff. Cheap 'van damme' blue speaker cable is much better value at around £1.50 a metre and you won't be able to tell the difference between the two. You can buy custom lengths over at AVforums.com from some guy.

But ye, we need to let him go and demo a few systems. I really recommend NAD !

my point is not that the example i quoted is the best speaker cable around, just that the stuff that is used to attach those speakers is absolute crap and here is a rough comparison, and the rule of thumb i go with is that 10% of your budget should go on interconnects and speaker cable no point in 400 quids worth of kit and cables such as those in the dude spiccy to connect them up...

Ye i wasn't sure if you were recommending that or just using it as an example . Coool. That stuff used to attach the sharp speakers looks like something from the 50's, some nice think 2.5mm square stranded copper cable will sound great in any separates system. Ive got some ixos stuff, but i went for it purely because of the thickness and it contained high quality copper. Plus i liked the white braid design too :D

but it only makes 50 WATTS a channel! RUBBISH! ;):p

It just goes to show how advertising can pretend to educate people in such a way that they fall for it hook, line, sinker and copy of the angling times.

Those type of systems, as has been said before, quote power ratings in all kinds of ways, all of which are true but if you treated a "proper" hifi system in that way you would get staggering output "numbers".

My power amp weighs in at something like 13Kgs, has two front-to-back strips of heatsinks that are the full 4"ish height of the case and supposedly makes less power than your uncooled, plastic unit which you could probably throw about at will.

As for the speakers, go dem yourself some Dynaudio speakers - then come back and tell me you need that whole list of "technology" sharp have branded your speakers with.

Bass response? You havn't heard a thing yet!

I wonder what you'd think of my tiny Cyrus setup :D
Was just thinking the same here. Amplification wise i've only got the smartpower and a psx-r so i'm pushing a sweet 60 watts @ 8ohms. :p :D

In the movie room at my old house it would achieve PA levels with ease. I actually began to worry about the windows in the room.

asim18... these guys aren't knocking your kit only suggesting that a change would reap major benefits. Go to a hifi store and have a listen. Once you do i assure you that you will see what we're all raving about! :)

I'm 23 & still have the Aiwa I bought when I was 17.
Got a kid on the way now so wont have a chance to upgrade it :(

Bought the HDTV, Upscaling DVD player etc & I was going to upgrade my stereo next. I was too slow... Luckily all my music is played through my PC & are just MP3's anyway so I doubt i'm missing much. My trusty old Aiwa is hooked up to my TV and is as close to perfect for watching movies as I can afford.

Maybe i'll get a nice system when I retire or when the Kid (due November) moves out (along with any others we may have) :)

This information means that only one signal is entering each speaker. This means therefore that there are passive crossovers within the speaker housing (the signal is split into high/low/mid frequencies after amplification, not before...).

Specifications don't tell you much (if anything) about how a system sounds when at the end of the day, a great sounding system is what you want. Comparing spec sheets won't tell you what system to buy. Listening and auditioning to various combinations will.

:)

nope. two seperate inputs. one for the sub, one for the rest of the drivers, using a passive crossover inside the speaker to feed the mid and tweeters no doubt:)
