I found Slogans post an interesting read for sure, and he does raise many of my points regarding the actual quality of Liverpool, something which, for me just doesn't do it (yet).

Over the summer Liverpool sold Luis Garcia, a player who, with Torres as the front man is the perfect player to play with. Instead you bought Benayoun, a player with a little more technical ability in and around his feet, but slower and with no read threat about him.

I remember watching Man Utd vs Liverpool games and it was always Garcia that scared me. He was the one capable of pulling something from nothing (and we know he did it a lot, such as the '05 CL Semi-Final).

Players like Gerrard can do stuff, but in all reality, he seldom turns up for the big games (a criticism of Henry, but Henry still scored goals).
Alonso is good and can deliver a pretty good ball, but lacks any form of cut-throat
Pennant is predictable and frankly not good enough carrying no real pace, lack of skills and a total lack of consistency in his crosses.
Mascherano is a talented DM and can definitely play football, he has an excellent short game similar to Makelele.
Sissoko is an absolute clown wrapped up as a footballer. He's clumsy, can't pass, can't shoot and can't really tackle.
Benayoun is a talented player, but he's not as good as Luis Garcia and doesn't really do anything brilliantly.
Babel looks a real talent, but doesn't have any confidence. The few times I've seen him play he's looked frightning, real pace and a rocket shot, he could turn into something.. but that's potential and Liverpool need something now.

There are others, but that's it. The problem with Liverpools Midfield is that it genuinely only has 2 players who pick themselves. Gerrard and Alonso.
You compare that to Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd...

Chelsea always choose between Makelele or Mikel. On top of that they have Essien who's incredibly good. Offensively they have Joe Cole, Lampard and Kalou. That's 6 players to fit into 3 or 4 positions. Not easy.

Arsenal are currently playing without Gilberto in the middle despite him being one of their best players last season. They have probably the finest youth player in the game in Fabregas, Dynamicism through Hleb and Rosicky, toughness in Gilberto and an all-rounder in Flamini. That's without mentioning potential like Walcott and Gibbs.

Man Utd have a 3 way choice between Carrick, Scholes and Hargreaves all 3 who offer different styles. We have the best winger in the world in Ronaldo, the Premierships greatest ever winger in Giggs and real potential with Anderson. Then there is Nani who is like lightning and O'Shea/Fletcher who will work happily anywhere on that line.

In comparison to the other big teams Liverpool are found wanting. The problem is, it's no better up front with Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea all having better strength up front (well, maybe not Chelsea atm).

Defensively Liverpool have always been good. There is no exceptional talent there, but rather a back 4 who work for each other, much like Arsenals in the early 90's. Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd all have better CB's but wing-backs are all about even.

It's in terms of their keeper that Liverpool are strong. Reina is simply brilliant, BUT, behind him you only have potential. Man Utd have Van Der Sar and Foster. Chelsea have Cech and Cudicini. Arsenal have Lehmann and Almunia (not to mention Fabianksi who looks a real talent). Liverpool have Itandjee, a keeper who only a week earlier failed a trial at Everton.

Whilst Liverpool have improved with signings such as Torres and some defenders, the problem is, there is absolutely no strength in depth. Man Utd won the league last year with better depth and it wasn't deemed good enough. Now we have some promising kids and £80,000,000 in re-enforcements. The fact that Liverpool have been grinding out draws is of no threat to other teams. Enough of that and the race will be over before it has begun.

i beg to differ, his contributions in the champs league and FA Cup spring to mind

Too tired to go through all the bits i don't agree with (may do so in the morning though) but thats about as wrong as it can get. If there was such thing as a big game player then its Gerrard, he's the only player to have scored in every single major cup final as well as scored against ever single major rival we have in league games, not to mention the amount of times he's come up with something special to save us in other important game (Villa this season and Olympiakos to name 2). Oh and despite a poor showing (like the rest of the side) he also scored twice in the WC in 4 starts.

A lot of stuff you said I don't agree with, but this just takes the biscuit. When Sissoko get's picked it's for his non stop work rate and defensive ability, he is one of the best in the world at closing people down and getting the ball off them, he tests the first touch of some of the worlds most gifted players and can go a long way to shutting down a teams passing game.

Anders0n, I feel the need to show everyone the real photo:

I could pick holes in every paragraph of your post but I'll leave that up to BaZ. Instead I'll pick you up on the one above.

IMO, all four clubs only have one stand out striker. Arsenal have VP, Man United have Rooney, Chelsea have Drogba and we have Torres. After those four players there isn't a lot to separate us and certainly not enough for you to say Arsenal, Chelsea and United have more strength than us.

Arsenal only really have Adebayor. He's playing well at the moment but is usually more miss than hit. No one has seen enough of their new signing to be able to comment on how good he will be. Chelsea have Pizzaro and Kalou (I'm not even going to bother including that other waste of space) but neither have done anything to suggest they're up to much. We have Crouch, Kuyt and Voronin. Not the best quality but they all chip in with goals and you have Saha and Tevez. Saha's usually injured and Tevez still has a lot to prove and IMO is too similar to Rooney to form a decent partnership with him.

Where is this strength that you talk about?

end of the season it'll be absolutely clear to you that united have more quality up front. i'll stand by that comment as well... actually that gives me an idea for a thread but i'll leave it till tomorrow.

Tiredness has gone so here goes:

One of the conditions on us getting Torres was Garcia going the over way, on top of that he was still recovering from a major injury, turned 29(?) and only had 1 year left on a deal, not to mention his amazing inconsistancy.

You mention Pennant having a lack of skill and pace, i couldn't disagree more; my complaints about him last year were that he had the pace and skill to beat the full back but his end product let him down, this season he's continued his improvement from last year and his crossing/final ball has improved no end and on current form is only missing goals.

You talk about Utd having the choice between picking Carrick, Scholes and Hargreaves and then mention Alonso and Gerrard as picking themselves (strange as in the rotation thread you mention you keep a stready cm and we rotate ours ) when in actual fact we choose between Alonso, Gerrard and Mascherano, all of which imo are better than the 3 options you have (Alonso over Carrick, Gerrard over Scholes and Mascherano over Hargreaves).

You mention that in comparision to Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea we are found wanting yet our central midfield and back 4 (regardless of individuals, over the last few years we've proven that our 'unit' is better than yours and Arsenals) is only equaled by Chelsea, our keeper is head and shoulders ahead of Arsenal's and Utd's (though bettered by Cech, though Reina has been faultless this year and Cech hasn't) and in Torres we look like having a forward as good as anybody else around.
Our downfall is in the wide areas, you have Ronaldo and Giggs (2 established top players) with Nani and Anderson (2 hot prospects) to come in where as we have Pennant and Benayoun (2 decent players though not top players) and Kewell (if fit) and Babel to come in (1 hot prospect and.... well just 1 hot prospect). However i don't think either of Arsenal or Chelsea are in any better position than we are; Arsenal have Hleb and Rosicky, neither of which look like setting the world alight and Chelsea have got Malouda, Cole and SWP; Cole hasn't looked like the same player since the WC, SWP is all pace and tricks without the end prodcut and Malouda looks no better than Hleb and Rosicky.

Also you mention Foster as your cover in goal even though he's injured for the best part of this season so can i use Carson as our cover? Itandje didn't fail a trial at Everton he actually turned them down (also reported that you were after him too) and he can't be worse that Lehmann has been either.

I think he's comparing Rooney, Tevez and Saha against Torres, Kuyt, Crouch and Voronin just i case you're counting wingers (Ronaldo etc) as well.

I'll have a punt that our strikers will score more league goals than yours (im sure your midfield will comfortably outscore ours mind), we may have 4 to your 3 but neither side are likely to start with more than 2 of our options.

Whats your idea about a thread? I won't be able to sleep untill i know ;) And it better not be a 'Prem Top Scorer' thread :p
