Hi guys,

Just wondering what your views are for small high street independent computer shops? Myself and my business partner are considering purchasing run to compliment our IT services company. Just trying to guage as many views as possible! Also,. this shop is RIGHT next to a university which could be a bonus.

Cheers guys,

Mal

This can work two ways. If they want to purchase something, usually a 'desirable' stock item such as an iPod, then you can probably do quite well out of them. On t'other hand, with service based jobs I can see non-payment being an issue, and the expectancy of a lot of work for nothing.

Generally full of older kit that's more expensive than newer stuff online. I would only ever use them as a last resort for small bits and bobs such as cables etc.

I would definately say go for it, next to uni ideal for students, as they can never wait to spend their hard earned uni loan, and most cant wait for the postman to come so would rather buy then... you also get some hot female students in as well...

My mate owns a place in wrexham which is close to the uni, used to help him out... we use to leg it to the front shop when we seen some hot totty! I honestly think you can make good money my mate is still going...

Pretty rubbish IMo.
can't compete on price with big players.
Cant compete on trust with large expensive stores.

The only time they seem to work well, is in a heavy student area.
Buy and sale 2nd hand computers and strip down parts into bargin bins. Offer home server/network installation. Ie a download and media server.

Edit - university, go for it. bargin bin galore. with a limited stock of high end goods and things like ipods and media streamers etc.
Also data recovery for dissertations.

A work collegue of mine owns a laptop repair and sales company. He actually owns a store in the birmingham uni complex.... lets put it this way, he gets more profit from that than his other two shops put together.

theres one in northern ireland i use for smaller parts, firewire cards etc. they seem to get a good bit of business from the general public who have no idea you can buy parts for computers and put it together yourself :)

Best thing for you to do maybe is to make a paper, ink, printer and others things related.

Couldn't really say, as you can probably guess my local PC shop from my location. That said though, the one just down the road from me is very expensive for the kit they offer. The high-end components are especially way overpriced.

If your next to the Uni you would be better selling consumable items rather than hardware. Youll need to be good at what you do, I would just focus more on what students are more likely to run out of and need at short notice.

You won't be able to compete with the big boys. No small PC shop owner makes anything other than a modest living these days.

how did you manage to build ocuk up from a small start spie?

Or did you have quite a bit of money put away to start it up?

There was a post around somewhere detailing that iirc.

Not sure if it went to the very start of OcUK or not though...

I hit the Internet at the right time, with the right idea. All expansion was funded organically. It would be impossible now without a big wedge of cash.
